Rounding off our GP panel session, Dr Minal Bakhai urges a holistic shift in “measuring what matters” to patients: “loneliness has the same level of [patient] risk as not taking your statins…”

All of our final panellists underlined need for a serious shift in how politicians and the public see the value of social care.

“If there’s an issue the government should be burning its political capital on, it should be social care [reform],” added #hospitaltohome event chair Isabel Hardman.

@mlchealth.bsky.social interesting nuance with care shift from hospital to home !
Thank you to all the excellent speakers and delegates who took part in our #hospitaltohome policy event this morning - we heard examples of successful care shifts in other countries, and wrapped up with calls for greater visibility and parity for care closer to home.

The true value of this bill is that it has started overdue wider conversation re death and dying well. Strategy designed on “we must get upstream preventing whilst ignoring downstream issues” is failing too many who have no option but yo-yo into ED for a poor experience in the last weeks of life !
The Assisted Dying Bill will take another (c.) 9 months to get to Third Reading. In that time, and beyond it, we may see similar moves in Scotland.

But Northern Ireland?

NI has a long history of being a “place apart” on social and moral legislation in the UK.
