Film noir: ACAB before ACAB was cool #Noirvember

This afternoon’s pairing is a classic case of good cop-bad cop: THE KILLER IS LOOSE (1956) & SHIELD FOR MURDER (1954).
“Cops, huh?”
“No, robbers.”
—John Agar as Sgt. Mark Brewster to police reporter Herb Butterfield in SHIELD FOR MURDER

Tonight it’s #NoirDoubleFeatures à la française: LES PORTES DE LA NUIT (1946) & MARTIN ROUMAGNAC (1946).
«On peut être perdu dans les endroits les plus familiers.»
“You can get lost in the most familiar places.”
—Jean Vilar as “le Destin” in LES PORTES DE LA NUIT

Today’s pairing involves adaptations of Eric Ambler novels: JOURNEY INTO FEAR (1943) & THE MASK OF DIMITRIOS (1944). Unlike with the books, I think I prefer DIMITRIOS. Remember, kids, "The only risk you take is in not doing as you’re told." #NoirDoubleFeatures #Noirvember #5-6 #Filmsky 📽️

This was a rewatch for me because I thought I might have misjudged this lackluster noir when I first saw it on Mubi. I didn’t. But Angel and Smitty rule.

“I got such a yen for you, it hurts like a toothache.” — Kay Medford as Angel in GUILTY BYSTANDER

I’m not a big Dane Clark fan, but I sort of liked him here. More importantly, the supporting characters provide enough local color to encourage you to stick around until the convoluted mystery's solved.

“What do they call this stuff, Kiss of Death?”
—Dane Clark in BLACKOUT
November 5, 2025 at 7:22 AM
Continuing with Criterion’s Blackout Noir collection, the films in today’s pairing both involve mysteries that don’t make a lick of sense... but it’s not because of the booze: MURDER BY PROXY (aka BLACKOUT) (1954) & GUILTY BYSTANDER (1950) #NoirDoubleFeatures #Noirvember #3-4 #Filmsky 📽️

This was more of a standard noir than DEADLINE AT DAWN but it had the same moral underpinning in terms of the character who blacks out.

“You make more sense when you’re drunk.”
—Janis Carter in FRAMED (1947)

This started out on the slow side but when it picked up I was all in. More of a mystery than your typical noir shenanigans. Loved both Susan Hayward and Paul Lukas.

“It’s all right to live in a cocoon like this if you expect to be a butterfly someday.” —Susan Hayward in DEADLINE AT DAWN

Today’s pairing is all about what people may have done under the influence and what they do or don’t remember about it. And, more importantly, what they're going to do about it: DEADLINE AT DAWN (1946) & FRAMED (1947)
Available at Criterion. #NoirDoubleFeatures #Noirvember #1-2 #Filmsky 📽️

As per usual, I'll be doing #NoirDoubleFeatures for the month. These will mostly be pulled from the 1940s since I'm bound and determined to finish up with that decade by the end of the year (for my Century+ project). I'll be starting with the films I haven't seen in this new Criterion collection.

Kanopy has also gotten on the #Noirvember train and has a ton of classic noirs under this banner, including some of my favorites like DOA, THE HITCH-HIKER, KC CONFIDENTIAL, and LURED as well as the Flicker Alley restorations of THE MAN WHO CHEATED HIMSELF, WOMAN ON THE RUN, and REPEAT PERFORMANCE.

Rewatched my final Carpenter assignment a bit earlier than usual since I’m heading out for tricks and treats soon. HALLOWEEN is certainly the scariest Carpenter and a fun rewatch during spooky season, but it’s not quite as interesting to me as ASSAULT or THE FOG. #FortnightOfFright #14

Well, folks, I've made it through John Carpenter's entire filmography. Tonight's selection was the much-reviled THE WARD. And you know what? I didn't hate it. It certainly held my attention all the way through, which is more than I can say for some other lesser Carpenters. #FortnightOfFright #13
