There are a lot of solid streaming alternatives, and a lot of ways to export/migrate libraries/playlists.

Qobuz, Apple Music and many others pay artists more per stream than Spotify.

BREAKING: RealPage is suing New York, challenging a new state law that bans landlords from using algorithms to set rents.

RealPage claims that its software, which landlords have used to collude on rents, is protected by the First Amendment.

In general, as many other (medical) illustrators I am sure, I have feared it will one day take our jobs. Yesterday, my friend Stephanie E. sent me the image on the right. A surgeon with a large Instagram following (Alexandre Mensier) posted it to teach people about Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome. I am the illustrator of the image on the left, it was part of my dissertation. In order to create this work, I witnessed a (breathtaking) fetoscopic laser surgery in person by the specialists of Fetal Therapy LUMC, Leiden I have spent weeks researching in books as well as in the anatomy lab, speaking to specialists, making sure I would get the anatomy and proportions exactly right. Thinking about color use and how that would affect the viewer of the image. Waiting for feedback, sketching, resketching, and eventually painting every stroke by hand and digitally finishing the illustration. All to get to this carefully crafted illustration. And then someone took it. Asked AI to make an image of it, just so they don’t have to pay an actual artist. No permission or credits needed. This is legal theft and there is not a thing I can do about it. Not only did AI ‘take my job’. It, or rather the person using it, took my actual work, time and effort and stripped it of its very core: accuracy. A surgeon without gloves and a random number of fingers on each hand. Don’t even get me started on the anatomy of the mother or the poor fetus getting a laser through its head. I have felt every emotion seeing this monstrosity of an image. Created in mere seconds, directly from not only my work, but all the specialists involved that put their time and knowledge of years into it… a drawing on the left of a needle being injected into a foetus, and a machine-assisted copy of it the surgeon used

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war: The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work. Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure. In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation. Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.
