I run a produce store, a florist, a wine shop, and mostly post about bike lanes.

📍Hyde Park, Chicago
Yeah I do get a little annoyed at all the Euro train nerds being like "a train to an airport is a waste!" when they are all taking the train (often multiple options) to the airport in their home city.

Arnhem's identity is all tied up with Operation Market Garden.

I wonder if that will start to fade as that generation is passing away.

I recommend exiting the airport, missing your connecting flight, and then posting about the downfall of civilization.

For straight platforms all you really need is the operator to stick their head out (like the conductor does) or a mirror.

For very long trains or curved platforms you use monitors, like NYC already does.

I’d argue for 55° because you can get away with no gloves

This is the opposite of what they should do.

For 100 years they ran an overnight single-track shuttle from Kimball to Belmont. That’s what they should do.

Obviously the international comparison is very conclusive but I wonder if a domestic comparison would be more persuasive to the relevant audience.

Chicago’s transition away from conductors in the 1990s is probably a relevant roadmap for NYC. (I assume Philly and Boston have similar stories)

Kind of opposite of the Netherlands.

At least no one will miss the current 1-story building when they knock it down.

A lot of old American apartments have this too (e.g. mine).

Interestingly this is the setup for one of my shops's building (1929).

Concrete decking between ground floor retail and upstairs apartments, but otherwise wooden joists between the other floors.

It may have been a legal requirement, not sure.

I had to really fight with the autofocus on my phone! I took a bunch where the grass was in focus and the buildings blurry

Was it the norm for 6-story urban construction?

My experience is I don't hear footsteps in old apartments in Berlin and Paris the way I do in NYC or Chicago.
