Thanks for making it this far! Some final reflections

✅Great location
✅Great range of presentations
✅Innovative presentation types (e.g., debate & case based learning)

😔Navigating parallel sessions
😔Limited AHP & nursing rep

And the opportunity for an oral presentation (in that giant room 🫣) on behalf of my co-authors on the results of a global survey of paediatric practice with tracheostomy.

Further results also now published doi.org/10.1016/j.ijpo…

Finally, thank you to my co-authors for enabling two different research outputs to be presented this year at #espo2025

First, the chance to share our poster presentation on #feasibility #slpeeps #wespeechies #laryngeal #ultrasound #VFMI

Posters - 2

More posters

📑 Post extubation stridor as predictor of clinical outcomes

📑 Perhaps one for reflection on differing clinical practices: use of fenestrated trache tubes & one-way speaking valves to support laryngeal rehab. No info on tracheal outcomes

Navigating Adolescent Voice

Dr Hseu, Boston Children’s Hospital presented a comprehensive discussion on adolescent voice assessment & differential diagnoses

Important: voice issues are not just about laryngeal level issues!

Feeding tube dependency - 4

Dr Wilken discussed the treatment protocol in Essen, Germany.

And finally emphasised the need for change:
Plan to put in a feeding tube but don’t make a plan on how to wean it.

Definitely also resonates with discussions around thickener… 🤔

Feeding tube dependency
Dr Wilken, Psychologist, Essen

Incredible compassion & dedication effused from this presentation. So, so much resonated:

“food is love”

“we share emotions with food”

“just because medically recovered, doesn’t mean psychologically recovered”

🔥

Laryngeal cleft - 2

For me > important clinical relevance:

Allow physiology to adapt & recover:

Instrumental Ax (VFSS, FEES) too soon may not show change.

Swallow rehab must follow surgery to support physiological changes.

This is relevant to other airway issues.

Type I laryngeal cleft

Dr Steven Sobol, Philadelphia Children’s discussed assessment & management of laryngeal clefts.

Clinically significant for #slpeeps #wespeechies especially for differential diagnosis & pathology for aspiration & feeding difficulties #PFD

Tongue reduction in Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome

Dr Seong Keun Kwong, from Seoul presented on surgery to reduce tongue size in BWS

Approx 1 case per 10,340 live births
Cosmetic and functional concerns drive surgery

Aim: preserve function & avoid damage
