I managed to scan the list before it vanished. It also includes works by Margaret Laurence, Aldous Huxley, Maya Angelou, and Alice Walker. Maybe Albertans can access some of these books when they come to BC for their Covid shots.

Yes. Nabokov was also interested in how easily we are persuaded (deluded) by romantic narrative even when it includes degraded and ugly behaviour. It's incredible that this tale is still considered by many to be a great "love story."

An older Canadian TV series loosely based on the Shakespearean festival in Stratford Ontario. Brilliant.

Pulitzer Prize winning writer argues that we must also consider the duplicity of Fitzgerald himself. Fascinating thesis. www.contrabandcamp.com/p/gatsbys-se...
Gatsby’s Secret
Read as the story of a passing Black man, "The Great Gatsby" is the great American novel.

Carney and Poilievre with their out-of-the-gate promises of tax cuts assume the electorate is myopic, unserious and craven. Have they not witnessed the aspirational response of Canadians to Trump's threats over the past weeks? We want the same aspiration from our leaders, not baubles and trinkets.

Clicked on the link to donate. Very top of the page is a quote from "Justin Trudeau, Leader of the Liberal Party." Please change that pronto if you don't want to squander the momentum the party is building.

Honest question. Who specifically on the left has been making these kinds of statements since the threats from Trump emerged?
March 21, 2025 at 8:57 PM
After 50 years of listening to CBC I have lost my trust. On Sunday #crosscountryfuckup, at a moment when CBC should have been channeling the clear, unequivocal voice of anxious/fearful Canadians facing an existential threat, we were given a clown show. Disillusioned beyond words.

Couldn't believe my ears when he said this. After ianhanomansing.bdky.social assuring listeners that the show was not about "both-sidesing" the question. Sheesh.

I was upset before the show but more upset after. Please read timfordwrites.bsky.social 's thread on this matter if you really want to understand why so many of us objected to the framing of the question and the format of the show.

Arrogant and incapable of conceding they might have made a mistake in normalizing and amplifying Trump's threat to Canada. They don't understand the danger of treating the loss of our sovereignty as an open-ended question and inviting people to discuss the pros and cons.

Just wrote a complaint to the ombudsman. Hope others will too.

I heard that. Couldn't believe my ears. So much for Ian Hanomansing's insistence that the show wasn't both-sidesing the issue.

The entire premise of the show was wrong -- treating the idea of annexing Canada as an open-ended question and inviting people to share their ideas and feelings. For goodness sake. Could the producers of the show have come up with anything more offensive and stupid?

Also, and I can’t believe I have to say this, NPR and CBC, but annexing sovereign countries isn’t a “proposal.” Not Poland, not Iraq, not Canada - no “proposals” in any of these cases. It’s not a grant application, it’s a violation of international law and an abomination.

I also submitted a complaint form.

The first email you read is someone who naively speculates that we could become a powerful state influencing the direction of the US govt. For goodness sake, this is so ludicrous it's beyond laughable and it's disgraceful this idiocy was given air and used to launch the discussion. Sane washing.
February 23, 2025 at 9:23 PM
Just write a complaint and submitted to the CBC on their webpage. Encourage others to do the same.
February 23, 2025 at 2:43 AM
It's not that we don't understand what is planned. The premise is just plain wrong. Don't treat Trump's idiocy as something that deserves discussion and his proposal as something to be looked at. Recast the question. Ask about the ways we will resist? Get angry like the rest of us. No milquetoast.

Stop equating left and right wokeism". Stop blaming the left for the abuses of the right. When a student asked me, in a challenging manner, to respect their pronouns, I bristled but knew I was only being asked to let go of an outdated gender paradigm. I didn't feel oppressed for god's sake.

Why 1957?

Why do you consider efforts by gov't and institutions to protect the rights/dignity of vulnerable groups "arbitrary linguistic fealty displays"? Reducing such efforts to "pronoun affirmation" is a cheap trick. Stop equating the legitimate asks of the marginalized with the gross abuses of the right.
