Re. the security breach of US #Yemen war plans: It seems I've been attributing the US administration with a level of logic and insight that it may not in fact possess. Leaving aside the incompetence of the breach and the abhorrent use of playful emojis to celebrate bombs that killed dozens of civilians, I'm struck by how unclear the US rationale was in the run-up to bombing Yemen.
• Is it to restore freedom of navigation through the Red Sea? Allegedly. But JD
Vance points out that only 3% of US trade runs through Suez.
• Is it to help Europe? Hardly. Europeans are described as free-loading and pathetic. But, since they benefit, they'll get the bill.
• Is it to send a warning to Iran? Apparently not. Raising the spectre of Iran is merely advised as a public relations ploy.
• Is it to weaken the Houthis and hence help regional allies ahead of a likely flare up of Yemen's civil war? No. "It [is] not about the Houthis" the chat tells us.
• Is it to re-establish deterrence? That's the claim. But the Houthis have been bombed tens of thousands of times over the past decade and remain undeterred.
