This is terrific, Carlos. Veyne was remarkable. Without his elegy book, there is no SLJ on elegy. He blew so many wrong presumptions away and thereby made so much of my own work not merely easier but possible. I disagree w/him here & there, but could not have proceeded without him.

2/…South Road, I think to myself, “this is Bill McCoy’s doing—good for him.” I avoid Manning Road in general, but I think the same thing whenever I’m there. It was an example of real leadership, and I think it meant a great deal to the researcher’s family. (I hope.)
