Slipstream Daydreams' logo has a tighter look! I was bothered by the previous version looking a little plain when juxtaposed with the super bright and gummy game art, so now it's got some extra detail and polish 🐬 #vndev #indiedev

october's task was implementing sound and music throughout SSDD! the trickiest part of it was getting the timers to play a ticking sound - did you know vboxes dont pass "show" events? 💀 thanks to a couple folk's help in the devtalk server i got it working though ✌️

i also made the decision to swap the light blue in Capital's palette for black - people kept thinking he was on the same team as Orion which is definitely on me for making their image colours both blue 🤦 i think the tweak fits his regal impression better, and it feels more mature.

Capital has six expressions with two eyes and three mouths each, for ace attorney style mouth flaps and blinks! this was a lot of work (more than i anticipated💦) but i think the resulting polish is well worth it #vndev #ocsky

lineart was the way to go after all! here's the final background art - i'm actually satisfied now. i really wanted crisp, clean shapes with lots of bright colour and gradients of light. also because i am using fixed width lines, i was able to use the pen tool to help with the big curves! #vndev

back in may i started rendering. my plan was to do something lineless, as this is a style i'd used before and it was fast.
…wrong. 🤦 while it was fast for quick character art, getting an environment to look as clean and crisp as the setting demanded was slow. time for a different approach…! #vndev

i thumbnailed out all the bgs for my alpha demo. super rough but that's all it needed to be, and i didnt worry about iterating multiple times - just went with my gut. here's the restaurant from capital's route in its earliest iteration! #vndev

i was struggling for ages on what i wanted to do for my background art - i did PAGES of various ways of editing photobashes to try and cut corners, but none of them had the look i wanted. these are experiments from way back in september and october last year #vndev

great little tip i learned - "if config.developer" is useful for stopping test menus from showing up in final builds of your game.
clicking start on the main menu jumps to a scene select menu for easy testing, but if you run an exported build it will go to the introduction scene!

during testing i discovered the only two times i messed up typing my expression names, they generated two perfect memes describing each character 😭 my bimbo and tsundere... #vndev

look. sometimes you try to draw a cute flirty expression and export it with full confidence and then you look at it in game and realise it looks like they've had five or eight shots of vodka instead.

more of these background art thumbs - its all fun and games til i actually have to render these, lol, but i now have all of the thumbnails for each section of track! there's quite a lot, but luckily i get to re-use them a lot because racing means you go in a circle. yknow. #vndev

super rough thumbnails for some sections of the race track. luckily i get to re-use these as the story takes place over multiple laps. current plan is for about 9 different ones, plus some speed lines for action sequences not covered by these #vndev
