Front End Developer doing UI and accessibility work on open source library software. Previously: MLIS @ UW iSchool; tag wrangling; wrote some tech books a while back. Pretty young for an Old Internet Person.
Really takes the heat off the child sex trafficking thing and the journalist’s catch-and-kill operation and the pardoned fraudsters and the air traffic control snafus and the Russian-authored “peace plan” and DOGE and the thing where secret police keep disappearing kids and schoolteachers
I'm mostly trying to stay out of US politics rn but the whole Sec of War doing the example of an illegal order to bomb drug dealers and start a war for oil whilst the Prez pardons a drug dealer is a pretty impressive shitstorm

This week, Netflix will drop a western with Lena Headey and Gillian Anderson as warring matriarchs of opposing clans. Not a one of the dozens of media writers I follow online has ever mentioned this show, and yet its three-week-old trailer has over 1M views. Make it make sense.

Amazon! Quit replacing the cover art on my ebooks without warning! I was emotionally attached to the mismatched lighting of those stock photo hockey players!

I’m old enough to remember when people spoke of Soviet travelers being asked for their papers with dripping scorn and smug vindication that America was better than that.

At this point I think it should be required that every breathless article about the death of bookstores must have footnotes that a) romance outsells all other genres of fiction combined and b) at least half that market is self-published, and chain bookstores won’t stock those. Indies do.
seriously, it appears that while basically nobody is reading fiction anymore when it comes to 90% of genres of literature, a lot of very horny people must be spending a lot of money on romance novels

This puzzle was EVIL. Several of the planets and the astronaut are single pieces. Most of the larger planets have an embedded star-shaped piece. The shapes around all those are bonkers. We love it.

I once worked for a small business whose founder ran off to Vegas (again) with the tax money, having temporarily forgotten that his wife owned 51% and her father owned the building.

That was previously my benchmark for professional self-immolation.

I mean I have been enraged about this topic for a while, but I had also never actually figured out how they calculate the poverty line.

I am legitimately speechless.
We have a “poverty trap” and it’s driving the destruction of social cohesion.

The “poverty line” is’t 35,000, it’s $150,000, and making more than one, and less than the other is worse than being “poor”.

Which is why the rage.

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Sometimes when there is too much laundry to maneuver the basket downstairs, I just tip it over the railing and collect it at the bottom.

My child, wide-eyed: You can just DO that?

Median US households (income $80K) are in poverty if the same calculations as in 1963 are used to rebase the poverty line threshold.
Why the USA is stressed: in 1963, poverty was defined as family income < 3x food budget. But costs have exploded since 1963, and food is now 5-7% of a budget including health, college, childcare, housing, etc—a realistic food budget multiplier for poverty is 16x, so families under $130K are poor.

Broke: DOGE is dead

Woke: DOGE was specifically constructed in a way to avoid accountability partially by zombifying the USDS which still exists as an entity

Bespoke: Dead or not, there needs to be a blue ribbon committee and a massive internal cybersecurity review to root out all the damage.
