SLCMAD went to @rowlandhall1867.bsky.social Middle School to speak to their 7th graders! The students presented insect traps they've been working on for different pest species followed by Dr. Rehbein presenting on invasive mosquitoes & their impacts on people & animals. Thanks for having us there!🦟

While we aren’t sure if mosquito larvae have bad hair days, we do know they have little hairs all over their bodies. Do you know what purpose these hairs serve?

Earlier this week we received mulch from Chip Drop that we've been patiently waiting for, and were so excited for the delivery! And we've been taking advantage of the nicer weather this week and tucking our native plants into bed for the winter season ahead.

SLCMAD & the Hartland Partnership Center connected over the summer through the Partners in the Park events through the @utah.edu! We'll be doing a weekly program talking to students about mosquitoes, bugs, & nature! Yesterday students got to meet some mosquitoes and learn about their life cycle. 🦟

Last week we went to a Spooky Science Night at Monroe Elementary! Not only were we impressed by all of the clever Halloween costumes, but by all of the student's questions and interest in our spooky science! 🦟👻🎃

The progress we've made on our pollinator habitat is so fun to see. The first plants from the Utah Pollinator Habitat Program were planted in September 2023 and this year we expanded! Check out the progress!

Sabethes cyaneus is a species of mosquito found in Central and South America. Its nickname is the paddle-legged beauty, can you guess why? These mosquitoes have a striking iridescent blue color from their scales and almost look like they float through the air while flying.

When do mosquitoes start "slowing down"? This depends on weather! Once temperatures get below 50°F and daylight shortens, mosquitoes become less active. As of last week, there were 8,609 mosquitoes collected in a single night from one mosquito surveillance trap. We'll see what this week brings! 🦟

Surveillance updates: There are 121 total WNV and 21 total SLEV mosquito positive samples. To see Utah's surveillance data visit: maps.vectorsurv.org/arbo. Wear insect repellent, cover up exposed skin, & avoid outdoors during dusk & dawn when the mosquitoes that carry these diseases are more active.
