One of my favourite forms of this: I think I was in like grade 6-8, my school participated in a competition to choose the most convincing anti-smoking ad. We all sat and watched dozens of dying people, dissected lungs, tar-filled sponges, etc. and reporting which one traumatized us most.
American PSA: don't do drugs, kids, they're bad for you!
Canadian PSA: we locked the most insane people we know in a room with a sheet of acid and a box of puppets, here's all the worst deaths they could think of

People won't even notice that they are now spending a majority of their time and effort not doing the hobby but researching and purchasing things related to that hobby. Their brain just views both as doing the hobby.

Since there are billion-dollar ecosystems dedicated to turning whatever hobby you have into the hobby of buying stuff for that hobby, you have to actively resist this decay.

Every hobby decays into becoming a meta-hobby of just buying the shit involved in doing that hobby. It's a lot easier than using that stuff, after all, and gives the exact same sense of accomplishment.

Nothing is a better demonstration of the anti-scientific nature of banning trans women from sports than the fact that the IOC's OWN STUDY found no evidence trans women have any advantage over cis women in sports, but they're planning on going ahead with banning us anyways
