Been busy and not found time for social media for a while. Worth sharing today’s walk though. 9 miles and saw spotted flycatcher, heard a goshawk, saw a firecrest and then at the end of the walk spotted this beauty. #cornwall #birding #ottering

Some great birds about over the Easter weekend. Cuckoo, Redstart, Tree Pippit, and I promise that’s a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker 😆 #ukbirds #uknature 🪶
Cuckoo: A slate-grey cuckoo stands low on a grassy patch, its yellow eye alert and a green caterpillar dangling from its slightly open bill. Well this is a mighty fine, if rather solitary tree. So majestic it was worth sharing.

If it helps, I’ll share my awful story. Once, as a student radiographer I was helping with a paediatric fracture clinic. I went for a break and came back to find my colleague taking an X-ray of a child’s arm. The patient was sat with his back to me. He was being incredibly brave with what was clearly an incredibly painful elbow injury. I didn’t want to make him turn and spoil the X-ray so I kept quiet. I thought I’d surprise him so while I was waiting I opened the hospital’s ’child distraction box’, but on a funny wig and finger puppets on each hand. As soon as the Xray was complete, I tapped on the glass screen and started to dance. I started to wave the finger puppets. The chap turned around and looked at me. He had a beard. He was a late-40s guy with dwarfism. Hr slowly shock his head while holding my gaze. It has been 20 years and I still haven’t managed to completely un-cringe myself.

Not a great photo but always a treat to see a bittern. There are approximately 80 breeding males in the UK, but in winter, numbers increase to approximately 600 birds. This one at College Reservoir #Cornwall
