Work in digital sustainability

Rest with a good book

Play in the forests, mountains, lakes and my kitchen
Me - Highlight text and turn into a heading

Google Docs - Turn the highlighted text & the previous, paragraph into a heading. Got it

Me - What? No, just the highlighted text.

GD - Maybe if you add an extra line break?

Me - Ok, try now.

GD - Nope, that wasn't it either. Maybe try Gemini, IDK.

Does anyone know of any agencies or small to mid sized businesses that moved from Gsuite or Microsoft365 to more ethical or EU based alternatives?

This article from @bell.bz on AI usage in companies and agencies is fascinating reading.

Really, really good.

Are people’s bosses really making them use AI tools?
Andy Bell had heard companies were forcing employees to use AI tools so spoke to developers to determine if that was the case and learned some horrors in the process.

This sucks.

I often find myself sharing @hf.co articles and initiatives when looking for more balanced take than the usual AI hype. Deeply disappointed to see this happening and their silence in the face of questions from @404media.co.

Do better.
Hugging Face is now hosting 5,000 AI image generation models of real people that were banned from Civitai due to pressure from payment processors. The company is not responding to requests for comment or showing interest in seeing this data. www.404media.co/hugging-face...

I am slightly floored by this article. I've read and listened to a lot of reporting about GenAI platforms aiming for engagement over accuracy and speed running the issues social media platforms have.

The latest @techwontsave.us covers the topic nicely and is a great chaser to the article.

Really enjoyed chatting with SEO oracle @davepeiris.bsky.social from @propellernet.co.uk for this article on how AI is effecting SEO, SERPs and discoverability.

TLDR: AI changes everything and nothing.

Surfacing from a rabbit hole marked:

"SEO, GEO, AI Overviews and declining organic click through rates".

Hard to know why site traffic from Google might be falling I guess.

Yer da is trying to print the internet again...

...and it looks gooooood.

Feeling slightly mindblown by this Picallili article about controlling how your site looks when printed. Fascinating stuff from @vale.rocks via @bell.bz's excellent Index newsletter and site.

Hugely important report on AI's current energy usage, AI companies' lack of transparency and what future energy demands might look like from @technologyreview.com

We did the math on AI’s energy footprint. Here’s the story you haven’t heard.
The emissions from individual AI text, image, and video queries seem small—until you add up what the industry isn’t tracking and consider where it’s heading next.

Luckily all this is offset the societal damage caused by the joy generated by the fact we can create Ghibli inspired action figure avatars of ourselves.
New from 404 Media: Civitai, the AI model sharing site backed by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), is allowing users to AI generate nonconsensual porn of real people, despite the site’s policies against this type of content www.404media.co/configuratio...

I've realised that all the time I'd usually spend listening to podcasts about tech bros and cos being awful has been high jacked by binging @realmsunknown.bsky.social. My inner geek is a lot happier than normal as a result.

Humble request for a touch more Culture/Iain M Banks content please.
