Best way to experience that book, too: it's supposed to kind of disorient you in a way, even while being aware that there's a structure the entire way through. It's a swirl, or I guess a (town-tossing, history-scrambling) whirlwind.
It's so damn cool, and just kind of hypnotizes you as soon as its weird rhythm grabs hold of you. There's nothing like that one.
(I mean that I felt like I knew the book before I even read it, basically the literary equivalent of the first time "Strawberry Fields Forever" broke through my fog and led me out of it.)
I can remember everything about the moment I picked up One Hundred Years of Solitude, from the room to the light through the curtains to what I was wearing. I'd fallen in love with particular books before that (especially Tolkien), but that one felt like I was retaining every word as I read it.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"
Maple Leafs vs. Bruins? And just WHY would I condone that kind of behavior by tuning in?
Hell yeah, that's a good idea. Quailman or Durango Doug.

You literally get to say the same thing as that animated cop: "THE BEETS CHANGED MY LIFE."
Remember when the cop picked up Doug and Skeeter because he, too, was a huge fan of The Beets?
