With this, I got to the point where I had a cuboid frame between pad and strut, then I just put a frame on top of the other frame, deleted the lower frame and strut, rebuilt the strut to the higher frame, deleted the frame and voila! Much tidier than anything else I tried.

Don't like turning snapping off, would take ages eyeballing every piece for every base and it'd never be perfect!
