In a way, I find the authoritarian takeover of our media system even more disturbing than the authoritarian takeover of our political system.

Our political system has been failing basically my entire adult life. But, the media system provided accountability and sort of worked. Now it’s collapsing.

Sometimes I think the real "peace dividend" since the end of the cold war was that a whole generation of analysts grew up underestimating the power of ideology, memory and emotion, and now they cannot recognize a huge cultural shift when it is staring them in the face.

Made the mistake of reading Tom's "21st Century Yokel" in a very quiet, very public place. The first time I bark laughed at a description of his father I got a hairy eyeball. The second time, a strong glare.

I've learned my lesson and will avoid reading 1983 in quiet public places.
... I can just be an author again, who works hard on books, probably doesn't make much money from them, but is not in danger of seriously damaging his own physical and mental health in the process.
