One book from the competition that I want to make sure nobody misses, though, is _The Lady of Linshui Pacifies Demons_, a set of seventeenth-century cult stories about a female deity who is still worshiped today in Fujian. It is wildly magical, unapologetically proto-feminist, vivid and earthy. 1/3

I'm looking at the original list of nominees for the short fiction in Hugos -- before the elimination of votes for the so-called slate -- The first 7 are ALL Chinese authors.

Chen Qiufan and Hao Jingfang were both eliminated. Hao Jingfang won a Hugo previously for Folding Beijing.

very impressed, I'm officially giving Angela Carter my "can do no wrong" card, a sort of special patience afforded to writers who've "earned it," so to speak

this book would be a disaster in almost any other hands

As diaspora, I cannot tell you what it feels like to see my name, work, and politics --

- were noted in a secret dossier
- where my work & sentiments were identified as concerning
- by *Americans*
- and then used to harm a colleague and associate.

You took the thing we fear, and you made it truth.

Adding this to the main feed in case it's useful. I've been trying to curate a critical reading list about generative AI for post-secondary educators that does not necessarily require disciplinary expertise to engage with. If it's useful to you, please let me know.
Late to share this but I do! Our intrepid teaching and learning centre will use this for a reading group next term: docs.google.com/document/d/1...
