I'm a Belgian father of two.
A game designer making educational games like Kadet, Wouw, Fluo, Luna, Mol en Beer & Kweetet for educational publisher die Keure.
I was on the game design team for Ghost on the Shore by like Charlie.
Love DnD and cycling.
We're developing an educational game aimed at practicing spelling. It's a puzzle-exploration game with non-violent turn based "combat". #labo

What would you call this fellow?

Last day before vacation. Do any of you have a 'last day at work' ritual? Mine is cleaning up the scattered notes with (by now) meaningless numbers, sketches of hexagon grids, written down lists of variables and semi-thought out game flow diagrams I had to track some day. #gamedev

I've been thinking about altering the expected parts of a game like movement or object interactions in a way that reinforces the core fantasy. Doom 2016 was a good example of this, where 'picking up HP' literally becomes 'melee finishing an enemy'. Any other good examples of this? #gamedev

And that brings us to today. We're working on prototypes for our next project which I'm very excited about. I feel like we're more ready than ever before to create something fun, educational and memorable for our players.

We are in the works of finishing up the last (for now) game in this series in which you get to sail a small boat and explore an open environment while feeding walruses and seals.

Now to more recent times. For the last two years we've been working on Kadet : a series of math related minigames used in the flemish educational system.

I mentioned the team changing, well that was in part because a portion of the team started a company called 'like Charlie'. Together with them I worked on 'Ghost on the Shore'. A game published on Steam, it had been an item on my bucket list for years.

From there one, I've been leading the team ever since. Making educational games/experiences like Luna, Wouw and Fluo. The team has changed a lot since 2018, but I alway got to work with talented people.

Then in 2018 Alex left die Keure to start teaching game dev, and I got the opportunity to lead the game dev team at die Keure. The first project under my lead was 'het dorp van mol en beer'. I'm still immensly proud of this one.

Around 2016 together with some colleagues we got into game jamming and created 'Mientje', a collective name to submit games to Game Jams on Itch. That was a real blast and a turning point for me. This is when it clicked to me that I love designing games more than programming them.

Thanks to former colleague Alex I arrived at die Keure in 2012 and got the chance to help work on Kweetet. A game ment to motivate students to do their homework. We had a blast on that game creating 6 stories in 5 years. It's still being used today!

This will be a bit of a thread to introduce myself on here, focused on my work. Starting of, I've been tinkering on games as long as I can remember. Adding home rules to board games, making levels in existing games etc... The earliest example I can remember being the Stunts editor. I think I was 4.

Of course this is complemented with digital prototypes to check if the assumed technological solutions actually work out. But for brainstorming / designing mechanics or game loops, don't sleep on the advantages of physical prototyping.

We are in the prototyping phase of a new project and I just love physical prototypes. They are so effective in communicating intent with the team and iterating on ideas goes way faster as well!

Ghost on the Shore is a story exploration game about emotional ties that transcend even death.
