The Bank of England's quantitative tightening regime is moving up the agenda.

The rate the Bank sells gilts could determine whether the Chancellor meets her fiscal rules.

But can the Treaury change its relationship with the Bank to remove uncertainty?

For the Spectator I argue that the government should not scrap the Digital services tax in exchange for a deal with the Donald

Starmer mustn't let Trump kill the Digital Services Tax
There are good reasons to think a trade deal should not give either party the right to interfere with the other’s domestic tax policies.

This is true if you don't count tuition fee repayments as a tax. If you do, you can add up to 15%. That's a big change since 2010.
UK taxes are not 'extremely high'. For most earners they are lower than they were in 2010 and the overall tax burden is not high compared to the rest of the OECD.
Rising already extremely high taxes is just not an option for the 🇬🇧.

My top reservation with BlueSky right now is there's too much of a "please keep your voice down, this is a library" vibe.

The occasional tit-for-tat exchange is part of what made the other place interesting
Sadly, some people seem to have adopted the Twitter habit of resorting to personal insults when they don't like the thrust of a particular argument being made.

Ad hominem attacks earn an instant block. No ifs, no buts.

Bluesky is a nicer place, and should remain a nicer place.
