A lot of pixie cup cladonia are a PITA to ID I think. The C. chloophaea morphocomplex does my head in; "senu lato" is suffient for me!

Almost certainly was a kestrel that you saw - Kestrels are the only raptors that can change their wing and tail position to hover in a gestational way almost perfectly. Buzzard can hover a bit but no where near as well as a kestrel. They are also much bigger.

They are. We did Gérard Manley Hopkins poem the Windhover for O level English and it was my favourite poem.
