Anyway any email that asks you to pay to have your book choosen by a book club, promoted to a book club, or appear at a book club is an email you should delete.

Also anyone offering you unsolicited paid promotion plans.

Emails insulting your web page and offering a fix = delete, block.

Etc.

My contact form has been closed and I keep hearing about all the AI book club/marketing scams writers are being inundated with, and it makes me whisper to myself: keep it closed a little longer.

Mystery and crime writers are also experiencing similar shenanigans—after extra long reply times—because MRM owns Ellery Queen and Alfred Hitchcock too.

I'm really proud of this novel. It has been in a lot of promos and the ARC was downloaded over 900 times. That was a good experiment; it beat the 1% of readers leave reviews metric (~1-10% is average I think, depending on how engaged your readership are), and it sits at 20 reviews on GoodReads!

This is at least the fourth story I've seen of an author having to exchange multiple emails (over 20) with this publisher to get the contract language to not be rights grabby and it's one of three where the writer walked away.

I appreciate the effort and transparency but I will also say-
On August 12, 1971, 16-year-old me mailed the first story I ever wrote off on its first submission to my dream market, F&SF. My tale was quickly rejected. On July 17th, 2025, I finally sold a story to that magazine. Here's why I felt I had to withdraw that story. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...

I don't think a writer can ask for a better reader response. 🖤
The first to come to mind…

Dawnhounds by Sacha Stronach @understatesmen.bsky.social is brimming with extraordinary imagination and the characters and world building are superb

Also a huge love for Countess by Suzan Palumbo @sillysyntax.bsky.social. Damn. Passionate, anti-colonial, heartbreaking.

ICYMI: I’m really proud of this story and @pseudopod.org did a beautiful job producing it (as always). I’d love it if you gave it a listen/read.

Very recently a new writer asked me what is your most unconventional piece of writing advice?

And I said "Keep Audacity" on your left shoulder. Of course, I keep common sense on my other shoulder but I often let audacity talk to me and sometimes I do what she says.

Her bookshelf scares all the boys in the yard,
Damn right, it's got Lucy Maud,
Damn right, there's Baudrillard.
She's out read you, and it's not that odd.
New fear unlocked
There is a subreddit where people post pictures of bookshelves "bookshelf detective", and sometimes it's like "girl I'm dating, what do you think she is like"

And then the comments guess at what kind of person the owner of the bookshelf is and it feels ODDLY HUMILIATING LOL

I really liked Henry the friend in Frankenstein until they went to London and learned he wanted to use his knowledge of Sanskrit to help colonize India....

And then I was like... Bye Henry. Thank you monster!

It's been a very good reread! Almost done!
