This ain’t much, just me trying to channel the thoughts of looking at the first laffy face clicker on someone’s FB picture of something dropped when their neighbor was carted away by ICE. Pretty sure he was not a bot.
The Other Neighbor A sad person posted a still life. A photo remnant of a snatched up neighbor/friend Gone suddenly amid a strange column of men. The picture, a lament and sign Of care and compassion For a life interrupted on someone’s whim. A family separated A soul upset and subjected To hardship, discomfort, displacement. Others offered the sign of empathy Inadequate but what’s afforded In the space. A face, shed tear. This other guy chose to laugh instead With the little yellow expression At his thumb. Not a bot, a man. I confirmed. Thirtysomething from a suburb The profile image he chose to represent himself A portrait with his wife and child Just above some Proverbs verse. Something pragmatic atop posts About the vinyl floor covering he sells When not laughing at catastrophe Of those who look different from him. In his khakis and starched shirt, He’s the ideal, in his own eyes, Somewhere above and better than Those born by chance To different standing, different skies. He’s not on trial. Faces no judgement. No discomfort. He’s in on the joke by birthright With smug friends in their own Khakis and Oxford cloth. Once they’d say They were ‘proud deplorables.’ Now not that so much Though still assured in their Chosen bands of truth. Not a bot. All too real. The other neighbor. The one not taken. A man. A comfortable, laughing man.

There will be times when the struggle seems impossible. I know this already. Alone, unsure, dwarfed by the scale of the enemy. Remember this, Freedom is a pure idea. It occurs spontaneously and without instruction. Random acts of insurrection are occurring constantly throughout the galaxy. There are whole armies, battalions that have no idea that they’ve already enlisted in the cause. Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere. And even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward. And remember this: the Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear. Remember that. And know this, the day will come when all these skirmishes and battles, these moments of defiance will have flooded the banks of the Empires’s authority and then there will be one too many. One single thing will break the siege. Remember this: Try.
