In aviation but incurably curious about renewable energy & clean tech. Blame the Physics degree
First time the battery has run out before the start of the 2330-0530 off peak period. Have to choose to charge with the solar now to avoid 29p/unit import later in the evening, but lose out on export at 15p/unit.

PS - spot the ASHP defrost cycling like mad in the am!

Spot the solar output from yesterday! 🔬 😂

0.24kWh. My max in summer is 70kWh. This is why I bristle slightly when I hear people say PV still works when it’s cloudy. Well it’s not zero, but it’s not very useful either.

Still, the battery saw us through pretty well

I got mine read during the service the other day as I’m thinking of selling soon - buyers need confidence the battery is good.

100% of stated capacity available at 81,000miles / 130,000km.
And I don’t faff with it going beyond 80% etc etc. Very rarely charge away from home though.

Dammit! It was just less than 98% 😭

145.5kWh of peak import, less 109.6 of free sessions = 35.9kWh. Mainly due to my own carelessness managing the charging schedules.

Still £100 for running & heating your house plus fuelling your car for over 2,500 miles is pretty decent! 😃

Double EV & ASHP goes with very well

Woof! 💪 🌬️ ⚡️
October 27, 2025 at 10:51 AM
Dammit. The battery is completely full. Should have totally emptied it beforehand. 😭

3hrs free electricity. The car is charging, the battery is charging, the heat pump is doing the hot water and everything is on!

How much can we get through?! 😂

Like this?

I’m not sure it’s possible to nail a cartoon any better than this.

Spot the heat pump cycles 😂

Fun innit!
September 11, 2025 at 9:54 PM
What’s that you say? Free electricity for an hour? Don’t mind if I do!

EV + house battery + ASHP hot water cycle + general house stuff = 21.8kW

Must try harder. 🤔

Very cool e-bike/scooter I spotted last night

FINALLY!

Solar’s only been in since early April! Mainly UK Power Network’s doing with a little extra, I suspect, due to an admin cock-up by my installer. However! We are up and running and time to watch the cash roll on in! 💰 💰 💰 ☀️ ☀️ ☀️

Trump’s been pissing and moaning about windmills spoiling his view from his golf course.

I can’t tell you how delighted I am to realise that I own part of that very wind farm, along with thousands of others.

An outsanding legacy to piss off the world’s biggest wanker in perpetuity!

🖕🍊🤣

Can I check for over-voltage records in my area? UK power networks website only shows if there’s been an actual power cut.

Gateway went off-grid every 30s y’day for ~4hrs. Kept trying to reconnect but went ‘Nah!’ & disconnected again

New update yesterday which seems too much of a coincidence

Until the DNO pulls their finger out and gives me the go-ahead for export so I can rake in the cash, I really am loving the ‘driving on sunshine’ thing.

Almost empty to almost full in a day. Nearly 200 miles. For nothing, and no extra carbon. Love it. ❤️ ⚡️ 🔋 🚗

While I’m getting nada for export, I’m stashing as much as poss. Managed to set the export margin so the Zappi doesn’t drain the house battery. Got about 25kWh into the car yesterday, probs more today! 😁😎☀️💪⚡️🚗

First full of solar yesterday! Looks like the inverter is about right on sizing (8kW vs 11.7kWp PV, temp max to 8.8kW) but we’ll see on a very clear day.
April 13, 2025 at 8:09 AM
Except it’s not increasing. It’s trending down, not up. See Dark blue section of the graph below (most up to date data I could find)

This notion that EVs, heat pumps etc are powered exclusively by coal/gas is simply not borne out by the evidence.

Love the graphic, can I suggest a small tweak?:

Mine was defrost cycling like a bastard yesterday. Trace from my Zappi as a poor man’s OEM trace, but shows the cycling most of the day. Temps from -3 to about 3. Ish. COP has been hovering just under 3.

This is sort of weather where GSHPs really pull ahead in performance terms but obvs ££££

Is that a third party plug in to your Octopus API? I’ve just found I can overlay my usage onto my Ripple wind farm’s output share which is quite cool.

(Very high usage due ASHP in big new place & high mileage EV)
