We fight for economic and racial justice. Join us in building a future where all people have equal dignity, respect, and power under the law.
When housing justice is on hold, lives are too.
Federal funds for safer affordable housing were frozen—leaving Lakeside Tower residents waiting for repairs.
We stand with tenants to end this freeze and fight for safe, stable homes for all.

If you suspect you’ve been discriminated against based on your source of income, it’s important to collect as much info as possible:

WHO you interacted with,
WHAT was said,
WHEN the interaction took place, &
WHERE you were renting or trying to rent

#KnowYourRights. Stand up to discrimination.

If a landlord refuses to rent to you or treats you differently because of how you pay rent, you may have experienced #SourceOfIncome discrimination. Landlords can ask how a tenant supports themselves & can require proof of income, but cannot treat types of income differently.

In Illinois, a landlord cannot require you to pay with wage income (money you get from a job), but must also accept any lawful form of non-wage income. At the Shriver Center on Poverty Law, we're working to enforce these protections, and ensure stable housing.

The U.S. House just passed the federal budget reconciliation bill, a cruel transfer of wealth from people living in poverty to the ultra-wealthy.

We were founded to fight back against 1996’s “welfare reform.” We’re still here and we will not be silent. Read more: www.povertylaw.org/article/the-...

Illinois’ 2026 budget fails to protect residents from federal attacks on healthcare & food aid. We proposed bold solutions — but lawmakers didn’t go far enough. The fight isn’t over.

Republicans in Congress are trying to gut #Medicaid. The move would cut health coverage for millions of Americans only to fund $4.5 trillion in tax breaks for billionaires. Contact your lawmakers and demand they protect Medicaid now. Details here: 👇

We should invest in families – that’s why we supported the passage of the Kinship in Demand (KIND) Act. This law supports family members who care for those involved in the child welfare system. It benefits Black children the most who are more likely than other children to be taken into custody.

Cuts to #Medicaid would be detrimental to people living in poverty.

We're co-hosting an event to defend Medicaid against dangerous federal threats that threaten access to health care for Illinoisans. Together, we can push back & protect this critical program: www.povertylaw.org/hands-off-me...
