Probiotic drinks, DNA candy, Agar Art, Bio-art keychains, "Materials with Life" stickers, and funny post-cards!

That's how we reached out to the public about our science on the German Unity Day #tde25

The Paris Summit of Synthetic Biology Centers, organized by @riceuniversity.bsky.social brought together global leaders of SynBio centers, biofoundries, and consortia to work out how to combine forces, grow expertise, fund discovery, and ensure ethical progress.
A productive 2 days in Paris!

My final presentation this Hamburg trip was at the NextGen Materials conference @dgm-ev.bsky.social

It was a great experience discussing my work on Remote Controlled Living Therapeutic Materials with the innovative materials scientists at the event!

The SPP2494 on Productive Biofilm Systems kicked-off in style!

In the 1st part I had fun sharing the vision of our collaborative project on getting algae and lactobacilli to work together

But the 2nd part was even more fun with a tour of Hamburg, a boat ride on the Elbe and tapas dinner 😁

Meeting with this community is always so delightful and inspiring!
I enjoyed presenting our project, ContainELMs, on a novel biocontainment systems in engineered living materials, along with my PhD student, Victoria Pinto, and our collaborators from KIT, Meike Koenig & Robin Wilhelm!

To Homburg & Hamburg in a day!

Morning - Homburg - 5k run in the @leibnizinm.bsky.social team for the Cross Against Cancer

Next 10h - travelling 650k to Hamburg for a week of scientific events - SPP meetings and NextGen Materials conference

Play hard Work hard 😁

All work and no play ruins a scientist's life!

At least, that's our excuse to take some time off and become kids again. 😁

By popular vote, the main activity was Laser-tag, which was as fun as it was exhausting!

I feel lucky to have such a fun group to create these memories with!

Post a non-religious photo you think of as holy.

That's us, the Scrappy Sandpipers 😁

All teams were randomly made and we needed to learn to work together quickly! It was a really fun time and I'm so grateful our institute promotes these initiatives

I engineer bacteria, but never saw it as a tech product until I unboxed Zbiotics' Sugar-To-Fiber!

The packaging is beautifully designed to be encouraging and educational about this incredible GMO probiotic that turns sugar into gut-friendly fiber.

Anyone else tried it yet?

My first Waymo self-driving car exotics in San Francisco!

It's was so much fun and surprisingly felt totally normal after a few minutes.

The car handles the traffic really well and I felt safe and relaxed inside.

Curious to see how fast this tech expands elsewhere.

But the real show-stopper was our excursion to Huangshan - Yellow Mountains, a UNESCO heritage site.
Our hike was filled with sights so spectacular that they seemed surreal.
And any superlative I can use to describe the beauty of the SUNSET would be an understatement.

Two weeks ago I was at the China-Germany Symposium on Immunity at the crossroads.

I thought it was going to be a cozy little event but was astounded by the extravagant organization, enthusiastic media team, and excellent science shared.

Thanks to our local hosts for pampering us so much 😁

It was great to be part of this event again this year.
The challenge is that the Firmenlauf falls right in the middle of this cycling period, so I had to decide between training for the run and cycling.
Still, it got me cycling to work every day, so I'm proud of the Kms I amassed 😁🚵‍♀️

We're making therapeutic bacteria but we want them to sense their surroundings, detect diseases, and treat these troubles

For that, we need smart proteins

So, we're looking for a post-doc protein engineer - leibniz-inm.softgarden.io/job/57549298...

If this post inspires you, apply by 6th Aug!

The training paid off! I completed the 5k Saarbrücken Company Run in 25:08 mins 😁
This is faster than my last 2 years.

And what a great experience to run with so many from our institute and many more cheering us on! 👏

Fitness isn't easy to stay motivated for but every summer I do so by joining health promiting events.
So, for Saarbrücken's Stadtradeln, I've cycled over 100k in 15 days and for the Firmenlauf representing @leibnizinm.bsky.social, I'm working on beating my time from last year 🤞

Last week our group engaged with the public in the @uni-saarland.de Open Day. We shared glowing bacteria, DNA candy, Bio-keychains & more.
Yesterday, we celebrated with a sunny Grill-fest and fun games.
Sandi from the group created this exciting video that captures the joy & energy of these events!

🐰 E. coli grew rapidly and were highly responsive to gel stiffness, showing dramatic shifts in colony size, shape, and metabolism.

🐢 L. plantarum grew slow and steady, not caring much for how stiff the gels were and ending up with colonies of similar size, shape and metabolic activity.
May 18, 2025 at 10:41 AM
What happens when you trap probiotic bacteria inside gels? Turns out, not all bugs react the same way.

We trapped gram-negative and gram-positive probiotic bacteria in gels with varying stiffnesses and saw what they did.

Here's the study - tinyurl.com/Probiogel
