Spent half century in radio sports biz. Authored book on my podcast, Tell me a story I don’t know: conversations with Chicago sports legends. Lover of jazz, wine, tennis….
27 years ago Kerry Wood pitched what is arguably the greatest game ever. Yes, even better than perfect games! He posted a game score of 105, highest ever recorded for a 9 inning game!

42 years ago Lee Elia unleashed one of all time great rants. I was there albeit, in the visitors clubhouse when it happened but I will forever be grateful to the Grobber (the late Les Grobstein) for providing me with the audio. As a free lance reporter, it made me allot of money!

Saddened to hear of the passing of Al Trautwig. I had the pleasure of knowing him through Sportsphone in the late 70’s and working with him at the Wightman Cup in 1981 At Chicago’s International Amphitheater. A terrific pro and wonderful person.

How apropos Terrence Shannon’s jersey was upside down. So was Illinois’s decision to retire it. Remember, the university’s suspended him amid a felony rape charge until a court stepped in. And why did Shannon deserve this honor after just 2 seasons in Champaign? You tell me!

Sad to hear of the passing of Greg Gumbel. A trailblazer in Chicago appearing on NBC 5 over 50 years ago, he also fashioned a great career & was more than just the host of the NCAA Tournament. He was also a terrific interview which you can find on Apple podcast.

Erik Kramer holds the Bear’s single season passing record of 3,838 In a 16 game season. Caleb Williams currently has 3,269. It’s a bit of a long shot he’ll catch Kramer this season but despite flaws and plenty to improve on, Williams’ ceiling remains very high.

I was sitting in the centerfield bleachers in 1972 when Harry Carey was doing the play-by-play from there. Remember, it was 445 feet away from home plate and Dick Allen hit a missile that reached there. We all scattered. He was an incredible hitter. it’s about time he was elected to the HOF!

So, who failed more…the fired coach or the GM who brought in a slew of underachieving veterans?

Deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bill Melton. One of the nicest guys you’d ever meet. He was a heck of a player, great story teller and a darn good analyst.

It’s time to consider a holiday gift and for those who haven’t purchased my book. It remains timely and a worthwhile trip through the lives of so many sports personalities with connections to Chicago. Great for a fan or loved one.

Told one of the Bears’ top candidates for the head coaching job is ND’s Marcus Freeman. But he’ll want lots of money and lots of power. He currently makes $10 a year in South Bend.

I am predicting the Bears to beat the Vikings Sunday! Then again, I had the Hindenburg -3😜

The fact Williams is releasing his throws almost the second faster is significant progress. So why did it take 10 games to get here?

Well, at lest the Bears scored
In the first quarter!
