I used Papermate markers the most. Obsessed with them. For pens though, I also like Papermate. I’m left-handed and they don’t smudge.

Book 28: All About Love: New Visions by bell hooks. “…there can be no love without justice” (19-20). I took so many notes that I know I’ll be writing about all I learned—and loved—forever. We must use hooks’s advice to make change, for love is an action word.

Book 27: The Warmth of Other Suns by @isabelwilkerson.bsky.social. Interviewing over 1,000 people for this Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the great migration, 3 personal stories emerge. Each left the South at different times, & each journey was difficult & dangerous.

Book 24: Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together In the Cafeteria by Beverly Daniel Tatum, PhD. Tatum’s point is clear: race is a topic many white people fear, and should be something we discuss, and speak up about, more. I learned a lot from this one.

Book 23: Unspeakable: the Tulsa Race Massacre by Carole Boston Weatherford and Floyd Cooper. A beautiful book about an unspeakable tragedy. I read and shared this award-winning title with my own children. Be sure to read the author’s and illustrator’s notes at the end.

Book 21: The Sum of Us by Heather McGhee, an expert in economic & social policy. She shares why the American economy often fails its people. The root problem: racism. She proves how racism hurts everyone, including white people. An important read, especially now.

Book 20: After reading a piece by @sifill.bsky.social on Substack, I couldn’t help but think of books like The Undefeated by Kwame Alexander & Kadir Nelson that lift us all up—the reader & the listener. We can’t give up. Together, we can be brave, persevere, & make change.

Book 16: The Love Songs of W. E. B. DuBois by @blklibrarygirl.bsky.social. A powerful generational story about strong Black women in Ailey Pearl Garfield’s family. This is a classic that belongs on every “best of” list, and one I’ll read again and again.

Book 15: His Name Is George Floyd by Robert Samuels and Toluse Olorunnipa. "I love you." That's the phrase that George Perry Floyd, Jr. said to almost everyone he knew. From the moment you begin reading, you will get to know who Floyd was as a human being. Pulitzer winner.
