Perhaps most infamously, a creator who goes by Borba published a web comic in 2017 called “I Will Survive,” which, with no irony, imagines Judy Hopps telling Nick she is going to have an abortion. “I Will Survive” broke out of the “Zootopia” bubble and now even has its own Wikipedia page. Rae references it in her Nick Wilde video. “I think it really contributed a lot to how we see Nick and Judy now, and Disney was not involved in that,” Rae said. “But it just shows that fan media really controls the narrative.”

But, like everything fueling the AI bubble, companies still compete to out unga bunga each other to make even better ways to boil the ocean to make shit no one wants. Prime Video didn't even opt for the tried and true method of asking for forgiveness instead of permission; Instead, they are apparently playing this nine-month initiative as an oopsie that it hopes will blow over while people flock to Cyber Monday deals. Time will tell if that cowardly gambit pays off, but history shows it has worked for other streamers, and we shouldn't let it continue.

Kirsh – Alien: Earth When Alien: Earth first rolled around, I wasn’t entirely sure whether it’d have the sauce. Sure, it looked great for a streaming show and had a great ear for end credit songs, but I wasn’t entirely on board with it until I got swept away by Timothy Olyphant’s Kirsh. There’s something about a reluctant parent-type character whose long since over the chicanery he’s forced to deal with yet taking amusement in catty barbs and wisecracks the way he does that made him the main attraction in a show with the promise that xenomorphs would walk on Earth. Just because Prime Video quietly walked back its AI Beta for anime doesn't mean we should let bygones be bygones. Keep that energy.
To illustrate how much of a non-issue an official production of an English dub for Banana Fish—something not uncommon with anime, especially if they're newly licensed on a new streaming platform—would've run Prime Video roughly $125-$150 an hour per session, even through SAG-AFTRA Union rates. Basically, this is peanuts compared to what the show has already burned through on content mill-brained titles like Beast Games. But, like everything fueling the AI bubble, companies still compete to out unga bunga each other to make even better ways to boil the ocean to make shit no one wants. Had a gripe to air out, which just so happened to funnel into a punch-up blog about a manga you should read.
There are countless ways to write romance manga. The least compelling are those that abruptly conclude the moment the central would-be couple finally gets together, as if all the effort—the meet-cute, the yearning, the indirect-kiss embarrassment, the interrupted fireworks confession, the euphoric kiss or handholding—was simply a prelude to a “happily ever after” with clear skies and no road bumps ahead. These kinds of manga treat their relationships as if the chase were the only interesting part, not the teeter-tottering of a couple building a life together. Time and again, these stories end with the tacit assurance that simply being together—like a child deciding their favorite food will forever be mac and cheese because it was their first—guarantees happiness, offering no proof beyond a wedding photo and a couple of kids. Tamifull’s How Do We Relationship? is different.

Angel’s Egg is the film equivalent of a one-way mirror, a surface onto which you project meaning and, in perpetuity, discover new things. Some will run with the Noah’s Ark analogy of its derelict world, others with its alien, militaristic invaders as allegory—fodder for the inevitable YouTube explainer with red arrows promising “details your plebeian brain missed.” But the film resists being chewed and digested that way. It is Lynchian in its refusal to be solved, a work that invites interpretation without ever demanding it.

My first anime was a heater.
The show has everything: Soft, rounded character designs that are relics of a bygone era Sophisticated cel animation with Neon Genesis Evangelion-style cut editing A rival character voiced by the incomparable Steve Blum A dreamlike soundtrack by Akira Mitake A mesmerizing ending theme, “Destiny” by Yui Horie, that feels like stumbling into a hidden fae forest… that’s underwater…in a derelict video game water level. Girlie put her foot in it in the booth, making a serene, haunting, and somehow perfect song for Android Kikaider.
