Applicant Rav Singh says:
“Our case is alleging that CPP Investments is mismanaging our pension fund by failing to adequately respond to climate change.”

This case could set a strong precedent: pension funds must consider the risks of runaway global warming.

The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPPIB) is a long-term investor. Its mandate? Maximize returns without undue risk of loss.
But it’s still investing billions in #fossil fuels – despite mounting evidence of systemic #climaterisk & #StrandedAsset exposure. #cdnpoli

Betting on high-carbon assets in a clean energy transition isn't just bad for the planet, it's a financial red flag. Canadians deserve a pension fund that invests in our future, not fossil fuel expansion.

VoltaGrid falsely markets its fossil gas systems as "sustainable" and "near-zero emissions." Meanwhile, CPPIB has invested hundreds of millions and sits on their board.

📉 For our pension funds - the institutions we’ve put our trust in to help secure our retirement future – the warning should be clear: “Even well-diversified investments can’t offer protection if the entire market is exposed to climate-driven instability.”

❗ From seniors having to dig into their long-term savings to rebuild after climate-fueled storms to people losing their home insurance due to wildfires, this long read explores the contradictions of pension funds investing in fossil fuels while their own members pay for the costs of climate change.

⏳ The Canada Pension Plan must put our best interests first. That means real climate leadership—not doubling down on fossil fuels. #CPPIB #ClimateFinance #FossilFree

Canada’s largest public investor is putting our pensions—and the planet—at risk. It’s time to divest from fossil fuels and fund a climate-safe future.

In just two weeks, CPPIB invested:
• $4.1B in fossil gas giant Sempra
• $1.4B in US fossil power company AlphaGen
• $717M into more oil production via CRC

These are massive bets on fossil fuel expansion—with no credible path to net zero and no plan to phase out risky assets.

Meanwhile, CPPIB spotlighted Wolf Midstream—an Alberta fossil infra firm—as a success story, ignoring its role in locking in decades of carbon pollution.

On Monday, CPPIB CEO John Graham said they’re eyeing more “nation-building” projects like the Trans Mountain pipeline. “We like oil & gas pipelines,” he told the Financial Post.
