This is where I shout into the void and create my own record of what has happened since November 5, 2024.

Lawyer. Dog and cat owner. Wife and mom. Red state progressive.

NYC can handle losses like this better than many local governments.

If my city lost its federal funds, it would need to raise property tax rates by 50% to make up for the loss.

(In my state, property taxes are one of the few revenue streams that local governments control.)

Someone asked if we had any cat pictures, but the best I can do today is deer. We surprised them raiding our bird feeder, but obviously they are not terribly scared of us.

Another day, another WTF moment.

I read this to my husband and he remarked that lately he feels like a man who is swimming, but everyone is trying to save him from drowning.

Frankly, I could also do with less saving.

The Eric Adams case standoff ends with a veteran prosecutor agreeing to handle the dismissal, apparently in order to spare all of his colleagues from being fired.

I hope the judge refuses to grant the motion, at least until hearing testimony about this.

This is an astonishing sentence for a lawyer to have written.

Constitutional principles don’t change based on the politics of the president.

(At least, not until that President has had the opportunity to appoint enough Supreme Court justices to swing the Court’s ideology in his favor.)

I’m trying to keep up with the various lawsuits against the Trump Administration that might affect stuff at work and came across this handy tracker.

54 lawsuits since January 20. That has to be some kind of record, right?

If Trump’s plan comes to fruition the Palestinians who call Gaza home will be shoved aside. Meanwhile the United States opens its arms to ethnic Afrikaners, calling them refugees.

What could the difference be? Could it be that Afrikaners are relatively wealthy white Christians?
President Trump reiterated his proposal for the U.S. to take over Gaza, telling reporters on Sunday that the strip of land was "a big real estate site" that the U.S. was "going to own." The idea, first announced last week, has drawn widespread international condemnation.

@rbreich.bsky.social was a lot more hopeful 20 days ago, when he wrote that the new Trump administration would force ordinary Americans to see that their government has been taken over by oligarchs.

Now Trump has a 53% approval rating and is threatening to ignore federal court rulings.

Actions like this leave a vacuum in Africa for China to fill. Incredibly stupid actions that make me wonder seriously who Trump is trying to benefit.

It’s actually embarrassing to compare President Ramaphosa’s post on X to any of Trump’s randomly capitalized SAD late night Truth Social posts.

South Africa is still the least economically equal society in the world for, even though apartheid ended 30 years ago. White South Africans, including Afrikaners, hold a disproportionate share of the wealth. And now we’re going to treat them as refugees?

Come the fuck on.

Only problem is he doesn’t know what “conflict of interest” means.

Collective bargaining is strength. If it weren’t, the bosses wouldn’t be so afraid of unions.
Unlike Elon Musk and the DOGE, we know what it’s like to actually work for a living. And we’re not going to let one unaccountable billionaire rig the government for himself.

That’s where we come in. We’re the Department of People Who Work for a Living.

I’ve had conversations with staff of one of my Senators and my Congressperson. The other Senator’s staff hasn’t responded to voice mail.

My Republican representatives are not interested in doing anything to stop Musk.

They are willing to dismantle the constitution to own the libs.

Goal for the day: for the third day in a row, make calls to my senators and representative. Ignore whatever bullshit Elon’s puppet Trump spews about Gaza or tariffs or MAGA. Those are distractions to keep us from watching the remaking of the federal government.
February 5, 2025 at 9:34 AM
I called my reps yesterday and followed up today. Today the response from my (Republican) reps was:
- all the Musk boys are federal government employees (they can’t say when that happened, just that it’s true now)
- this is just a way to examine spending

THIS. Honestly more worried about this than I am about tariffs.

Some people voted 3rd party.

But I guarantee you that NOBODY voted for a fucking billionaire to be raiding our Social Security.

So a) the Wall Street Journal has been an enthusiastic Trump supporter for years, so it’s interesting to see them called “always wrong.” B) 80% of that $36 trillion in debt is held by insurance companies, pension funds, and other investors, and the federal reserve itself. Not foreign governments. 🤔
Trump defends his controversial new tariffs: “Will there be some pain? Yes, maybe (and maybe not!). But we will make America great again, and it will all be worth the price that must be paid.”

I guess someone decided the federal government needed to do Elon more favors. We should be grateful communications won’t be limited to Truth Social. 🙄
The NTSB says it will no longer email news outlets or reporters with notifications of upcoming press conferences, including those on plane crashes in Washington and Philadelphia.

Instead, all notifications will be made on X.

We're filing a FOIA to find out more about the change in policy.
