Yes, the shame. We were on food stamps for a few years after my father died after not being able to work for his last year. I recall the great shame we felt in taking it. At that time food assistance came in the form of stamps so everyone who saw you pay knew you were poor.

Essay: Two years before she went on public assistance, Joanna Rakoff had a best-selling novel that won literary awards. She presented like a middle class working mom. But in reality, she was struggling — worried about feeding her kids and keeping a roof over their heads.
Someone you know relies on SNAP. They just don't talk about it

After wearing this Spring 2001 R2 jacket, my teenagers took it over. But the zipper was detaching. @patagonia.com repaired it for us and they did an awesome job. While I have some newer Patagonia stuff, I also have a lot of usable 20+ year old clothes from them.

Approaching the very windy summit of Mt. Eisenhower, White Mountains, New Hampshire. We had a stunning view of Mt. Washington, Monroe, and Jefferson from the summit. My son and I also hiked over Mt. Pierce and Jackson, making it 6 of the 48 NH 4000 footers for him. I’m up to 31.

The local pink lady slipper hotspot is hot this year. Also Merlin from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology told me about the birds we were listening to.

I’m accustomed to riding under the BU bridge but yesterday I ran under it. I dropped my car off at the shop yesterday morning and ran home the long way back 7 miles, 9:15 pace. I’m “training” for a half marathon next month so I have been bumping up mileage, from 4-5 miles to 8 miles on Monday.

I went for a road ride today. It included Mass Ave through Lexington as they waited for the parade but also the Reformatory Branch, Battle Road, and a short trail that happened to get in my way.

I had not heard about the death on the Reformatory Branch crossing of Route 62. It is a tough crossing that would benefit from the cancelled underpass. I was always terrified on the crossing, especially when I did it with my young boys.

Descending Mt Lafayette in the White Mountains of New Hampshire on Sunday. You can see the newer wings of Greenleaf Hut with Cannon Mountain across Franconia Notch. It looks like a bluebird day but we summited in the clouds 45 minutes earlier. If only we could have waited.

I talked to the owner of this Kei van. He was driving his kids in it the day we met but he told me it’s principal use is for carrying his tools for his trade. It would be a huge bummer if he lost the right to use this vehicle in Massachusetts. cc: @gravelinfluencer.bsky.social
