Yeah, my cousin got started late on reading for a similar commitment from his mom to "homeschool" him early and basically just didn't teach him anything, and his sister had to catch him up to grade level. But it's wild to have a kid IN SCHOOL be allowed to be so far behind or undiagnosed with issues

A lot of these kids weren't raised on phonics! My friend's cousin was likely never taught phonics, so the idea of sounding anything out wouldn't be in her arsenal, so there's this whole generation just raw-dogging literacy with rote memorization! But like your mom, someone should have noticed :(

The thing is, in 8th grade, you're 12-14 years old. Spelling simple words and basic grammar should be second nature by that point, and if they aren't, then you deserve extra tutoring. It's not an issue of capability, it's an issue of negligence. Her parents are educated. Her school is funded. WTF.
