The Dickin Medal is the highest award that can be issued to animals in British military service. Bearing the words "We Also Serve" it has been awarded 75 times since its creation in 1943.

Only one cat has ever received the award.

This is the story of Able Seacat Simon, of HMS Amethyst. 🧵 1/25

Hardly new info, but BSky should know:

Warsaw's water quality is monitored by eight clams with magnets attached to their shells. If contamination in the water causes the clams to close, the magnets trigger an alarm and shut off the city's water supply.
Thank you, little guardian molluscs.

Absolutely! I'd like to see the same enthusiasm for stand-out finds shared also for stand-out deposits: a buried soil, a house floor, a midden - any fool can appreciate a bit of treasure!

Libraries matter more than ever now! They embody a beautiful & brilliant idea that we must never stop defending. The idea that knowledge is free & belongs to EVERYONE. We all need to support our libraries & librarians - especially when people seek to ban books & free thinking. #libraries #books

Perhaps a good time to reintroduce my thesis work! I'm looking at the long history of reuse and recycling practices in Cyprus. My research uses a new methodology and cataloguing mechanisms to record the quantity or reuse per object in order to better articulate pre-industrial circular economies
My thesis is on reuse in Nea Paphos, Cyprus. The long history of reuse and recycling from Hellenisim to Tourism. I add this delightful fountain made from a Roman sarcophagus, marble screen from the basilica, capitals from the Gothic Church, local limestone, next to traditional columns!

Ueno Station has changed a lot since 1927. This postcard is from the Kitagawa Chikashi Collection at the Edo-Tokyo Museum. From Ueno you could take the Ginza Line, the oldest subway line in Asia, to Asakusa, Tokyo's top entertainment district at the time, and maybe run into Yasunari Kawabata.
