Feels like a good time to remember that when Gregory Swanson applied for admission into UVA Law School, the graduate committee accepted him.
It was the UVA Board of Visitors who overrode that decision and denied him admission, because he was Black.
Swanson took them to court, and won.

Oh, the irony – a BOV charged with ending DEI based on false claims of meritless outcomes is itself appointed through political ties rather than merit or relevant experience. Replace the patronage system with a nonpartisan selection committee & increase representation of faculty, students, & staff.

The choice of UVA Pres Jim Ryan to resign rather than force his board to fire him underlines a major problem:
A lot of folks, especially upper-middle class centrists and liberals, still seem to think we can find a polite way to fight authoritarian takeover.
To which I say: OK, Schumer.
