As we have said time and again, when we permit punitive deprivation of welfare & allow harsh treatment towards one group (migrants/people seeking asylum), we enable the slow but certain creep of that deprivation to others.

Our new report with the @healthfoundation.bsky.social shows how structural racism operates across our labour market, housing systems and the lived environment, limiting a person’s opportunity to be healthy.

How racism affects health
We identify ways in which racism operates within the everyday structures of our society – the labour market, housing systems and lived environment – and limits people’s opportunity to be healthy.

My blog about a recent trip to Liverpool.
Community cohesion narratives and £600k grants, in face of mainstreamed racism & £500m austerity cuts - most ppl on the ground can see through insincere and plaster fixes to systemic probs and political choices.

We are constantly encouraged to engage in this fake turf war about 'class' or 'race'- the two are so often deeply entangled:
“By focusing on FSM status as some kind of fixed category, we risk ignoring how race and racism is constitutive of minority ethnic pupils' class and therefore their poverty experiences – not incidental to it.”

When the number of school nurses, youth workers & other non-educational support (inc counsellors) in schools is dropping, but police in schools are either fixed or increasing - we have a problem. Education should not involve criminalisation.

Proud to have published this report yday, but deeply worried that not only is this necessary 27 years after @runnymedetrust.bsky.social first published a report coining the term Islamophobia, but that things seem to be worsening.
This summer’s racist riots were the clear outcome of intensifying Islamophobia in the UK.

Our new report shows that Islamophobia is growing, and highlights its structural nature across British society.
