“Do you need space?” Johnny asked quickly, slightly panicked, like the thought hadn’t even crossed his mind. “I can—” He started to lift his hands up and away, shifting his weight to take a step back, and Simon reached out, quick as lightning, to wrap his arms around his husband’s waist, keeping him close. “No,” he said, voice muffled by Johnny’ shoulder, and it bordered on a plea. “No, I… No.” Without hesitation, Johnny’s arms curled around Simon’s neck, holding him just as close, and something sharp and jagged in Simon’s chest unraveled, a tightness released, a burden discarded. They were pressed together from forehead to knee, skin to skin without an iota of air between them, but it wasn’t sexual. They’d stood a thousand times just like this—post-sex, post-mission, post-shopping trip—with no goal in mind except to take comfort in each other’s presence, the heat of their skin and the pressure of their embrace.

Chapter 5 Summary: He couldn’t stomach the thought of spending every day within arms reach of his husband and having to treat him as anything less than the love of his life. That, more than anything else, would break him. So he did the cowardly thing, the despicable thing, and ran. Notes: This chapter has gone through a far more rushed final proofread than usual because I spent most of the day moving my entire WIP library from google docs to ellipsus. If there are any glaring mistakes, I deeply apologize (and take all of the blame as I worked quite a bit on this after my beta readers left all of their lovely comments). Chapter 4 Summary: Because the universe was a cruel puppet master, it was raining. It clung to his eyelashes and the fibers of his mask, dusting his skin like feather-light kisses, and it almost felt like Johnny was there with them as they infiltrated the compound, clearing room after room of Konni soldiers, hunting for the head of the monster. Ghost had gotten separated from the rest, at some point. He wasn’t sure how, but he wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth, especially not when this particular horse’s name was Makarov and the gift was the two of them alone in a room together. Notes: Here's the beginning of the end of the angst. We're officially over halfway through and it's an uphill road from here! Chapter 2 Summary: “Happier than a fuckin’ frog, aren’t you?” he asked, shaking his head at his absurd sergeant. He couldn’t help the way his eyes were drawn to the way the rain pooled in the hollow of Johnny’s throat, the way rivulets ran down his face like tear tracks, and he had the sudden urge to kiss him. “Aye, why wouldnae I be?” Johnny retorted, lifting his head to level a breathless grin at Simon. Notes: Welcome to what is truly one of the sappiest things I've written in a long time. It's also, notably, a false sense of security and the last bit of fluff this fic will have for a while because we have five more chapters to get through and they don't call me the angst king for nothing. I've updated the tags with a few things that don't apply to this chapter but will come into play very soon after, so I want to give you guys at least a little bit of a heads up. I hope you enjoy!
