U.S. Representative for RI’s 2nd district, father to Max and Lucy, husband to Julia, fighter for working people, and shameless booster of Rhode Island. 🌊⚓️🇺🇸
Good morning from the only place on earth where you can cut heath insurance for 17 million people, still somehow add $5 trillion to the debt, and call that a big accomplishment. 😒

Update: I and dozens of other Members of Congress were denied a meeting at the US Treasury today.

But while we were trying to get in something awesome happened.

Thousands of people began filling the streets. Americans are not going to let Elon steal their money and data.

Heading to the US Treasury with @JasminForUS to ask for a meeting with the unelected, unvetted Elon lackeys who have taken control of the Treasury payments system. We need answers.

Despite Marjorie’s best efforts, 80% of Congress voted to fund USAID.

President Musk has no legal ground to shut down an agency Congress overwhelmingly voted to fund.

They are back-tracking because we spoke up. Good.

But make no mistake: their OMB memo ordered a freeze of *all* grants. The Medicaid and SNAP portals went dark. Head Start providers couldn't draw funds.

This was not a coincidence. It was their plan. And they screwed up bigly.

The same thing we do about all the bad policies he’s pushing. Sound the alarm and win the midterms.

But the moral of the story is, when Trump says he will do something, take him at his word.

And yes he’s serious about taking over Greenland, Panama and Canada. That’s a thread for another day.

End.

Third and most importantly, Trump likes tariffs because he alone will get to pick winners and losers.

Presidents have broad authority to raise and lower tariffs unilaterally.

That means Trump can exempt industries and countries at will. The perfect opportunity for corruption.

Unfortunately it’s not that simple. The world has changed.

While US manufacturing employment is a fraction of what it once was, manufacturing output is actually at a record high.

Most manufacturing job loss is actually due to automation not trade policy.Hard to turn back the clock on that.

Governors representing states across our country traveled to DC for the inauguration and had to watch it on TV in the basement.

Meanwhile this group got to sit on stage.

It’s already clear Donald Trump doesn’t serve the United States of America, he serves the United Billionaires of America.

Not for nothing, my first inauguration for State Treasurer in 2015 had a high of 18 degrees!

It was a special day for me, but it was Gina Raimondo’s show because she was inaugurated to her first term as Governor. She decided to keep it outside. It was fine.

But we’re a little tougher in RI.

I’m sure Trump’s decision to move the ceremony inside had everything to do with people’s safety and DEFINITELY was not because he was worried the pictures would look bad if people didn’t show up.

Here for no particular reason is Obama’s 2008 crowd (28 degrees) and Trump’s 2016 (48 degrees).

Carter will lie in state at the US Capitol this week. He was a brilliant, stubborn, divisive and compassionate man who had a rocky Presidency and incredible post-Presidency.

I love that he has some special history in RI, and that we were one of the 6 states to vote to reelect him.

End.

There is good footage from the Providence show in the documentary “Jimmy Carter Rock & Roll President” which I highly recommend.

It will give you more appreciation for Carter and for
music of the era.

My friend Bernie McKay helped organize the event. He tells me that is raised $250K, which was a big sum for a campaign in those days.

It helped save Carter’s campaign and get him elected. Gregg Allman called the show the high point of an otherwise rough tour - the band broke up months later.

The Allman Bros were on tour and agreed to do a benefit concert to help Carter’s campaign. It just so happened that the tour date that worked best for the band was in Providence, at the brand new Providence Civic Center (now the Amp).

3. I could be wrong, but the secret service agent outside the Cranston Hilton looks a lot like Robert Wanko, who was captured in this famous photo of the Reagan assassination attempt by John Hinckley. Wanko’s obituary does say that he was on Carter’s detail before Reagan’s.

1. It looks like Carter had two events on his RI swing. One at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Providence, and the other at the ‘Cranston Hilton.’

The Cranston Hilton, no longer a hotel, is now a prominent part of the Johnson and Wales University campus on Narragansett Ave.

If you hold onto your old stuff long enough, it comes back into style.

Some may ask, why do this here instead of X?

In short, Elon is messing with the algorithm to boost MAGA accounts and suppress Dem content (yes, this is true). Plus, so many bots.

I’ll still use X, but for more standard stuff for now. 8/

Dems are not doing as good a job as Rs communicating in online spaces.

The biggest shifts toward Trump were among young voters. This was true across all racial and gender categories.

Relatedly, post-election polling shows the biggest shifts were among those who get most of their news online. 2/
