Lights of the North. A New adult contemporary romantic fantasy by Serra Leta Pitch. Aurora finds herself a visionary for god-like warriors, in a hidden war for Earth against a force of eldritch horrors. Joining a collective of Spirits and their Lightning Guardian, her anxieties deepen. Eager to seek approval as a competent member, Aurora is conflicted when she develops feelings for their Guardian commander. With time running out, Aurora must overcome her insecurities and sort out her emotions, in order to prepare for their final war. Comps & Tropes. The first comp title is The Games Gods Play by Abigail Owen with the related comp themes of: first person, contemporary setting, and romance with a godly being. I was nearly flattened on the ground, staring at the one towering over me. He leaned in closer. Time was slowing down. My muscles stiffened and I stared – I was watching a dangerous predator ready to sink its teeth in and finish the job. I tried to think of a way out, but it came up blank. I saw something I shouldn’t have. I was going to die right there. “Rise,” he commanded. The power in his voice reverberated throughout my body. The weight holding me down loosened, and I sat up with ease. Words escaped me when a large arm stretched out. Somehow, I was compelled to take it, feeling safe to do so. Before our hands made contact, a static spark struck me from his fingertip, and I was instantly transported back to that snowy pathway under the northern lights.

Lately been digging into niche anime/manga from the 80s/90s for some unique stories. Needed some vibes and inspiration for writing.
Just finished watching the Earthian OVA. I expected a fantasy about angels on earth, got a cyberpunk instead with bio-humans and cyber-angels? Sure, ok!

Creature Romances: For the Ladies
The otome game where you can choose between a multi-eyed slime and a giant isopod. It's short, even when you go through all of the routes/bad ends. Monster boys really don't like it if you tell them you hate them, though 😶

Red Cat Ramen
Yeah, I do tend to post A LOT of cat-related shows 😅 This one has talking cats who run a ramen restaurant. Enjoy food shows/ramen? Enjoy cats? Might be the perfect SoL, then! I just can't sometimes when they actually act cat-y. 😆 I can't not recommend this show/manga.

The Twelve Kingdoms Book Two
After the dread and despair in Book One, I'm glad to see Book Two broke away from that. The info dump of worldbuilding continues on with some neat things, along with a few silly ones. I'm glad that the answers were all FINALLY explained in this one.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd
(I only seem to have time for one Trails a year 😅) Another great entry! While I can see why it's a divisive title in the trilogy, I really enjoyed it, especially after seeing what they were doing with the story. On par with SC, for me.

(Cheating a bit because I watched the show, which was SO good, and haven't picked up the books yet).

A couple beach pictures from today. Never seen ground squirrels burrow so close to the ocean (several feet from the shoreline). I can only imagine how detailed their tunnels go during storms/high tides.
A chonker ground squirrel sits on a rock super chill. A bunch of cormorants relax on large rocks sticing out of the ocean. Their wings are stretched to dry. A couple seagulls are standing on neadby rocks.

Something touched my back. I didn’t want to move. It was about the size of a rat, but I never knew a rat to have so many legs. It pinched as it climbed, pulling my jacket down from under its weight. Moving methodically up my spine with those gripping legs, it turned and scaled my left arm. Quivering, I contained myself from uttering a sound and peered over. Nothing but small indentations on my sleeve. Something was definitely touching me. Why couldn’t I see it?

I'm actually picky with my sci-fi (mostly a creature nerd) but this one really clicked! Read through so fast then watched the anime with a great adaptation! A group of teens set out for space camp, get lost in space. But there's a bit more going on... From the Witch Watch mangaka!

Angels are outsourced to R&D all of Earth's animals. They navigate through the perfect creature designs and the many, many failures... I mean, there's a reason that long-legged penguins just wouldn't work! A great comedy series, especially for fans of zoology.

Read this before watching Evangelion 3.0+1.0 and wow this added SO much context! The anime is super short and shares the daily adventures of Hideaki Anno and his wife... all from her perspective, of course. Voiced by Eva characters! Nerdery + spouse bickering.
