Cell biologist and microscopist turned patent agent. It's a long story 👩🏻‍🔬🔬 Lover of fungi, sour beers, textile arts, cell biology, sci art. Now also a wrangler of a smol human.
I spent most of today sick in bed. Checked BlueSky to see... everything. So I went out to check on my roses for a moment of zen.

Spouse made some serious progress cleaning out and planting the garden this weekend. I was no help beyond toddler wrangling. Said toddler did manage to find a snapping turtle! And because we live in CT, the rats with hooves capital, there's a 10 foot fence around all of this.

Two years ago, we planted a native columbine near our rock wall. Last year it didn't come back so we figured it didn't make it. This year it showed us that apparently it was just storing up energy for an extra big show ❤️

Now that I've had a minute to blur faces, here's my panorama from this afternoon's gathering in Hartford!

Thanks @luskinglab.bsky.social, @valeriejhorsley.bsky.social and our other organizers for such an energizing event.

In case this 36-hour project with a toddler running around wasn't enough for you, you can always throw together a batch of Kaiser rolls while the loaves are baking.
March 3, 2025 at 12:35 AM
Admire the loaf when it's done and wait impatiently until it's cool enough to cut into 🤤
March 2, 2025 at 10:19 PM
Preheat your oven with a Dutch oven inside. Once it's hot, score a loaf and put it in the Dutch oven to bake.
March 2, 2025 at 10:19 PM
Divide in four portions. Preshape them and let them sit for 30 mins. Then do the final shape and pop them in bannetons/bowls. Stick those in the freezer overnight.

Last coil fold. Wait an hour.
March 2, 2025 at 10:19 PM
One more coil fold. Wait an hour.
March 2, 2025 at 10:19 PM
This time do a coil fold. Wait 30 mins.
March 2, 2025 at 10:19 PM
Second turn. Wait another 30 mins.
March 2, 2025 at 10:19 PM
Do first "turn." Set the timer for 30 mins.
March 2, 2025 at 10:19 PM
Mix dough, consisting of starter, water, salt, and flour. Let it hang out for an hour on a warming mat.

We interrupt your regularly scheduled doomscrolling for some weekend baking. Friday night: feed sourdough starter. Saturday morning admire your yeasty friends.

I'm not stress baking, you're stress baking.

Weekend project: sourdough loaf. Our daycare provider expressed interest in learning to bake with sourdough, so I brought them some starter and we've been baking in parallel and texting pictures back and forth.

Hello! I am finally here. It's been a while since I saw y'all and I missed you. Much has happened since we last saw each other in the Dark Place, and I'm now a Patent Agent! HMU with any non-ac career questions, commiseration, or IP stuff. For nostalgia's sake, have a #FungiFriday pic🍄

Trying to do things to fill my cup. Today that was making a load of rye bread with my little kitchen helper and a batch of my grandma's no-bakes after the little one was in bed. ❤️
