Don't mind the new art for 88 Films' release of Shut Up, I Love You, but the presumably original on the other side is pretty phenomenal. Brigitte Lahaie simply one of the most beautiful women of all time

Would a tighter script that made something approaching sense, less Space Girl and bigger stars have resulted in a film that didn't flop? Possibly. Equally, it might now be as forgotten as Hooper's next film, the far less seen Invaders from Mars.

The physical special effects of the dessicated possessed vampires are of their rubber suited time, but there's also gloopy gore that wouldn't be out of place in either an Italian horror film of the time or indeed Robert Rodriguez's half of Grindhouse.

What saves Lifeforce from being a folly in all senses of the world and instead has rightly made it a cult folly is just how staggeringly beautiful it is, and not just in the physical sense with May. The lighting is absolutely gorgeous, the visual effects brilliant for the time.

The film veers wildly towards its ending, plot holes and dead ends abounding, with Railsback and Firth both driving through an apocalyptic London, dispatching the odd zombie vampire as they go.

Oh yes, Patrick Stewart is in Lifeforce too, now probably the most famous of all its stars, in a nonsensical diversion in which he via at least two other possessions is also possessed by Space Girl, while Space Girl is herself back in London setting off the mass possession of the city.

The dialogue is frequently stilted, and Railsback gives his usual full on deranged performance that anyone who has watched "Duane Barry" and "Ascension" dozens of times like me will be more than familiar with. His eyes roll and bulge, he screams, he gurgles, he kisses Patrick Stewart.

There are also some laugh out loud funny moments just for the absurdity value. "A naked girl is not going to get out of this complex" Dr Fallada declares, while moments later we have this terrific and yet hilarious shot of Space Girl in silhouette approaching a security guard.

And yet May is also Lifeforce's ultimate folly. Did anyone involved in the film really expect it to be a blockbuster hit, as was clearly the aim, while featuring just so much frontage? Yes, there is male nudity too, one of the male nude vampires being Mick Jagger's brother Chris no less, but still.

And yes, finally we have the true star of Lifeforce, Space Girl, or probably best known as Naked Space Girl, Mathilda May. May is well, to say the least, pneumatic, and one can only imagine exactly how many actresses of the day went through nude castings for the role only to be rejected.
