Extreme flooding mainly. The ground was already soaked from a previous storm. Roads/bridges are damaged from flooding so places like Asheville are cut off.

NY Times has coverage in their "Helene Aftermath" section. I don't think anyone is communicating the scale of the disaster.

Sure. I live in NYC and enjoy watching birds interact with the urban environment. For both photography and birding, my skills are modest, but I turn up a few interesting sightings. I'm vocal about local environmental issues, but I would avoid that with a general audience.
