Old movies, old guitars, old records, old books, old photos.
Thanks! Here’s a good one of a mandolin orchestra I got a while ago. I would dearly love to get my hands on bass mandolin like the one on the left.

I think I might have mentioned this in the past, but The Shaggs are playing Avalon AV-2T guitars. They are obscure Japanese guitars that were made for about 18 months in the late 1960s.

The back of the 1943 Dell paperback edition of The Phantom of the Opera has a map of the Paris Opera House with all the important locations marked. Dell published hundreds of books, now known as Mapbacks, with similar maps on the back covers. #PhantomsFriday

Stina, I’m so sorry to hear this. Black cats are truly special. We lost our Portia last year and we miss her every day.

There are a few Maigret shows out there. The series with Michael Gambon is my favorite. There is also one with Rowan Atkinson, where he is trying so hard to not be Mr. Bean that it’s distracting.

For day 8 of Spooky Season, here’s Tales of Unease, a collection of short stories. British folks may remember the 1970 TV series of the same name that was inspired by this book and its sequels.

I think it’s an excellent likeness. Did you know she released a couple of LPs of bawdy music hall songs?

For day 4 of Books for Spooky Season, here’s the Necronomicon. This paperback edition was published in 1980 and its editor is named simply as Simon. Is this the fabled book described by H.P. Lovecraft or was it written by Peter Levenda in the early 1970s using bits and pieces of earlier works?

Day 3 of Books for Spooky Season brings us The Ghastly One, the biography of Andy Milligan. He made zero budget exploitation movies like “Guru, The Mad Monk” and “The Rats are Coming! The Werewolves are Here!” and by all accounts he was a thoroughly unpleasant man. Still, the book is a fascinating.
