I had a terrifying thought.

Due to youtube's multi-language track feature, we might only be a few updates away from content creators being able to create not just different tracks for the whole video, but localized tracks for *sponsors*.

Not just the ad read but the whole product/service. [cont]

It's my biggest video yet: A 4,000 year-long 100-minute narrative about how real-life political history has shaped the underlying basic mechanisms of an entire genre of games we take for granted today.

I hate how many times i've started to tallk about sports with someone only to inevitably hear the phrase:

"yeah, I put a $50 bet on them last night and won, crazy!"

Nothing illuminates the gap in how we engage with sport as fast and as bright than that sentance. fml.

Today, we are announcing the formation of United Videogame Workers-CWA, an industry-wide union formed by @codecwa.bsky.social and @cwaunion.bsky.social 💪🎮

We're launching at #GDC2025 this morning to build a video game industry that works for us. We're done playing.

I am kinda tempted to run a tournament, but with twist.

BLB has Spring Training, a time of silly things but also a bit of a testing ground (ABS most recently).

What if there was a format/event that was basically ST but for a game to figure out what competitive players liked in terms of rules?

Much of esports is built on fundamentally unsustainable sources. The low-knowledge investors, wealthy enthusiasts, crypto scams, money laundering, sports washing, etc that contribute so much of this industry's funding aren't long-term paths to sustainability, they're frantic jumps between life rafts

This is like a weird quirky thing I do as a writer, and I am not super sure why it shows up every time. I mean I have some suspension but first thing first:

Whenever I am writing or thinking about what near future space warfare looks like (like, current tech level) I inevitably feel... guilty? 1/x

@standupmaths.bsky.social Hey Matt, I am struggling with a math-related thing.

I love tournament brackets, and I am trying to find a way to calculate the number of possible permutations of the first round in a single-elimination tournament.

So for example, a 4-player bracket would have 3: [cont]

We should really be starting to come up with the first 0-gravity sport for the folks on the ISS to play. I don't mean an earth sport adapted to space (like tennis, baseball, etc). I mean a fully fleshed, from the ground-up sport that can only function in near 0-gravity.

Kofie's work at SB, including Fumble Dimension and Most Valuable Player, was awesome. They explored how video games and sports interact. His contributions to the rest of the SB catalog should also not be understated.

Looking forward to where he lands next, or even if its him flying solo.
After 8 years at Vox Media/SB Nation/Secret Base, I have been laid off. Thank you guys for supporting me throughout the years and I hope you join me for whatever is next.

Secret Base will continue to make great things, I honored to be a part of it.
I no longer work at Secret Base... Now what?
After 8 years of working at Vox Media, SB Nation & Secret Base my chapter there has abruptly closed. So what next? Let's talk about itPatreon is here: https:...

From early nov 24, to late nov 24, then march 25, now cancelled.

Very likely the right desicion but holy hell that is a wild ride for everyone: players, devs, and SEGA. FM has been selling like hot cakes the past few years, missing a whole yearly cycle is nuts.
Football Manager 25 has been cancelled, developer Sports Interactive has announced.

The heavy dose of POE2 and lack of FM25 has twisted my brain into this idea that a simulation football game with A-RPG mechanics for the players would go hard.

Imagine rolling a CM and using an aug (training) to see if you roll +% pass completion chance.

I have nothing but good things to say about @startgg.bsky.social (as any poor soul who has been witness to my rants about formats and tournament organizing knows)

So i am happy they are fully independent again and I hope this revenue will prove to be stable and long lasting.
We’re excited to announce that, starting today, Start.gg will be returning to its roots as an independent company supporting grassroots and professional esports communities. You can learn more in our article below:

I was among the top 100 Matcherino partners in 2024 and raised over $4500 for open, grassroots tournaments!

Very happy to have done so, looking forward to potentially getting back organizing in the near future!

Back in 2021, PMG reported on the unseen games industry crunch taking place at outsourcing studios in SE Asia.

Since then, the companies we looked at have continued to work on some of the biggest games in the world, without any push to improve the conditions of the artists doing that work. (1/7)

Playing Project Zomboid (B42) and finding people's IDs and dog tags among the zombies, for some reason, profoundly impacted how I look at zombies on a narrative level.

As in, the goal of using zeds is to purposely dehumanize them and allow them to be in that uncanny valley that we all [...]
