A week ago, the Trump administration laid off thousands of people at HHS and its agencies.

The cuts were so deep, and touched so much, we're still learning about the impacts.

Here are a couple stories that have stood out to me.

1) @levfacher.bsky.social on the gutting of a pain-research office.
Unique pain research office eliminated in HHS purge
Pain is the most costly chronic health problem in the U.S. In latest RIFs at NIH, an entire division devoted to pain research was closed down.

NIH has rescinded its scientific integrity policy. Hard to see this as anything other than clearing the way for shoddy research on things like vaccines. Regardless of the rationale, it's bad news for public health.

I’m sending emails to every Democrat at every level that I have ever voted for, campaigned for or given $ to making it clear that all ends of the Senate Dems cave and support this CR. Time for a real opposition party.

When Trump paused federal funding to all grants and loans, it plunged scientific research into chaos. Though the freeze was rescinded for some sectors, it's still in largely place for universities and research institutions. The damage will be lasting.

A New York doctor was criminally indicted for allegedly prescribing abortion pills to a girl in Louisiana, setting up one of the first major legal challenges to “shield laws” enacted by some Democratic-led states to protect doctors providing abortion access since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022.

I am one of these NSF postdocs. NSF has frozen everyone’s access to their salaries and research stipends (that were already awarded) with no information about when they might be expected to be unfrozen. It still appears like we are expected to continue doing our work though.
Apparently all the PhD researchers holding prestigious NSF-funded research fellowships are having their salaries withheld until some unspecified time when the leadership figures out how to eliminate any grant funding that doesn’t align with the president’s political ideology.
It’s official: all funding requests made on Tuesday by postdocs for their salaries have been unilaterally rejected by NSF.

NIH appears to have canceled/postponed all of its study sections—the independent review panels that approve federal grants for health research.

Such grants fund the work/salaries of 300k people at more than 2,500 institutions
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.
