Now online, enrollment & baseline characteristics of our study on patients with symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis initiating non-operative care.

We identified 4 subgroups, which may inform health needs and allow for more patient-centered care.

#Pain characteristics including bothersome pain, activity-limiting pain, greater number of pain sites, and more frequent pain medication consistently associated with lower & declining physical capacity over 6 years in older adults.

I was able to collaborate with this great group on a study that leveraged VA data to assess the representativeness of a cohort study on #backpain. Something we should try to do more often with the increased use of EHRs for recruiting study participants.

Title: Evaluating the representativeness of a cohort study of low back pain: Using electronic health record data to make direct comparisons of study participants with non-participants from the study population. Author list Highlights: Sample representativeness in pain studies is rarely assessed using individual-level data. This was the first study to directly compare a pain study sample to the broader study population. Participants in a cohort study of low back pain were highly similar to non-participants. This approach can be considered as a standard method to examine representativeness in pain studies.
