I was digging through 4K screenshots of various movies, and my jaw hit the floor at this shot of Melinda Dillon reflected in the mirror looking perfectly alien with her elongated neck, odd angle, and oversized head. I've seen CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND countless times and never noticed this.

Thursday! Anecdotal aside: I bought this movie on widescreen VHS in 1996, carried it with me in my luggage whilst practically vibrating to play it, and watched it shortly after getting home. It's the first and only movie I've ever [rewound and] watched a second time right away.

I really enjoy the influence Miyazaki has had on Nintendo's art directors. There's the general house style of Ghibli, but there're also direct allusions like this scene echoing not just Ashitaka's curse but Hisaishi's terrific score. Darn good sources of inspiration, to say the least.

King Dodongo's death in the lava field is one of those boss deaths that really makes you wince. You kill this innocent beast, probably a primordial ancient, and in its rolling death throes, it sinks mostly into the lava that then cools, immortalizing his agony.
