#13 The Enemy of the World (1967-1968)

Because the show was by episode in the sixties and not by story, it was fairly obvious when a member of the mail cast went on vacation. Their character would be locked up, knocked out, or otherwise ignored for a whole episode, leaving the absence notable but…

…capacity. Astrid, Kent, Fariah, and Bruce all stand out in the strong supporting cast, especially as so much of this sees the Doctor sidelined. This is also the final new continent visited in the classic series, since South America never got its own story. But at least we got to go to Australia.

…monsters or aliens. It’s easy to see how Barry Letts could go from directing this story to producing the Pertwee era; if Troughton had more glam, this would be a Third Doctor story. David Whitaker brings another complex and morally ambiguous story; he was really meant for sixties Who in some…

…show, and certainly the best actor to play the Doctor. The rest of this is a thrilling spy story, with double agents, betrayals, assassination, political destabilization, and everything you’d want for its genre. This is a story that doesn’t have any monsters or aliens and it doesn’t need any…

…performance as the Doctor that it’s as if there were two different actors. Further, we get scenes of the Doctor impersonating Salamander and of Salamander impersonating the Doctor, and these moments bring their own unique flares. I truly believe that Patrick Troughton was the best actor in the…

…not really ruining the story, as so many of these serials are just that entertaining. I bring all of this up because even though Troughton did NOT go on vacation during this production, it feels like he did because he’s such a good actor. His performance as Salamander feels so distinctive from his…

I think about this comic a lot, especially panel 1 Gabe.

Though to be clear, the story arc of the Bond films is “there’s definitely his first story” and “there’s definitely his last story” and “we had more returning characters than just 007, M, Q, and Moneypenny.”

#14 The Time Warrior (1973-1974)

This is my vote for which story to show someone who had never seen the show but was interested. It soundly introduces the premise of the show, provides a POV character through new companion Sarah Jane, and delivers an exciting and funny story to boot. Linx debuts…

…that Linx makes and dresses up as an armored knight. It feels like a story of archetypes in many ways, which could be why it feels so accessible. It’s a story that is easy to watch because of the stink bombs, eccentric scientists, and reflective abanico, not despite them. It never misses a beat.

…characters of all of his stories. There’s something generally enchanting about seeing a good sci-fi story set in pre-industrial times. This nails that concept as well as The Time Meddler or The Visitation. Here, it’s because of Boba Fett looking as much like a merry man as possible, or the robot…

…the Sontarans admirably, showing his blind focus for war and craftiness for deal with everyone around him. In particular, all of his conversations with Irongron are a delight, although that to a degree is just reflective of the high standard that writer Robert Holmes brings to the supporting…

Speaking of Dual Gauge, can the next expansion be boxed for expanded expansion storage? It’s getting pretty crowded in the base box…
