The Avengers (Chechik, 1998). This isn't a complete movie. It's a Tom Cotton (Hellraiser) of a movie. Most of the pieces are here but, in the editing, it's been skinned alive. Absolutely captures the spirit of the show, looks gorgeous and, even now, I have a strong nostalgic fondness for it.

One Battle After Another (PT Anderson, 2025). I've watched this 5 times now. It's a perfect film. It's starting to feel like a top 10 film of all time. Also starting to believe that it's not going to sweep the Oscars (even though it should). Doesn't matter if it's remembered.

Picnic- Cadbury's UK. Underrated.

Agreed. But the likeness is great. Also next to my Wedding photo (1999)

Watched two Bill Crain movies. Mostly due to @elrickane.bsky.social on @purecinemapod.bsky.social. Mirage (Bill Crain, 1990) and Midnight Fear (Bill Crain, 1991). Both are absolute bangers with endings you don't see coming. Btw. You can watch Mirage on a YouTube rip. But Midnight Fear is on Prime.

Elementary season 1-7.5. best network show of all time. And a perfect ending. Beat the UK Prime cutoff by hours. And as somebody who read every Sherlock Holmes story as a child, the best adaptation ever. You named a be after me...

One Battle After Another (P.T. Anderson, 2025). This is the film Leo should get an Oscar for. This is going to sweep if there's any justice in the universe. It's also a masterpiece, which helps.

Elementary season 1 (various, 2012). Ignored this because I thought it would be a poor copy of the BBC show. It's better. Its true mishap is that we'd forgotten that mainstream American networks could still do an X-Files style version of Sherlock Holmes in the peak TV era. An undiscovered gem.

Wolf Guy: Enraged Lychantrope (Yamaguchi, 1975). Pure exploitation movie making. And still trying to make karate a thing that could compete with kung-fu, which it can't, visually. This said. Watch this Gonzo insanity immediately.

Oceans Eleven (Soderbergh, 2001). Absolute stylish, Swiss watch-level perfection.
August 20, 2025 at 7:39 PM
Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning (McQuarrie, 2025). I know of the complaints about the opening but I just can't help but admire it's propulsive energy. Still love it. Bloody great.

The Big Fix (Kagan, 1978). Heard about via the Tarantino interview on the Church of Tarantino podcast (@churchofqtpod.bsky.social). It can't decide whether it wants to be a light hearted caper or a gritty 1970s PI film- which the score suitably obliges. It's still wildly entertaining though.

Eddington (Aster, 2025). Had the same issues with this as with weapons. Simply don't buy the third act. A rewatch may fix this that said. It's still great but just didn't love it.

Weapons (Cregger, 2025). Can't really criticise without spoilers. Nails the atmosphere, character work wonderfully. I just don't buy the third act. I'm usually quite allergic to this sort of stuff. Almost gets away with it. Will still watch whatever he does next.

Alien: Earth (Hawley & various, 2025). Best Alien since Alien 3. Brilliantly constructed, phenomenally acted and of you're wondering where the budget went: it's all on screen. Can't truly comment until it's completed the session but bloody hell it's great.

Billy Jack (Laughlin, 1971). Am absolute ego-trip of a movie. Absolutely bonkers save-the-rec-centre movie that one minute is a hapkido fight and the next it's a Montesori school lesson. Can't decide whether violence is the answer or not. Weird as hell and great with some beers on a Summer's night

The Born Losers (Laughlin, 1967). Incredibly brutal, very rapey exploitation biker film introducing Billy Jack. Enjoyable if not particularly good. Cool sunglasses though. An absolute time-capsule of a movie.

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood (Tarantino, 2019). His best film. A perfect film. Poster underneath is in universe but by the best artist currently working: Tony Stella. In life, I will live by this motto- 'I try'. Now go watch it (or watch it again).

Reservoir Dogs (Tarantino, 1992). Saw this at a rep screening with my now wife on 1993 or 1994. She hated it. I loved it. As an announcement of intent, it's simply brilliant. As such if does what Tarantino does, samples other movies but makes something new at the same time. Still brilliant.

Pulp Fiction (Tarantino, 1994). Saw this with friends at university 31 years ago. Have seen the op opening far too many times and was concerned it was not going to live up to nostalgia. Needn't have worried, it hasn't aged a day and is still the masterpiece I thought it was then. Perfection.

Jackie Brown (Tarantino, 1997). Has an excellent cast, great script, beautifully shot & tightly controlled. Have never loved it though. And still don't. A film I respect even if it never really clicks for me.

Inglorious Basterds (Tarantino, 2009). Gets better every time I watch it. Walz is simply astounding. The set pieces are tight. The Melville-esque paving works a treat. And it ends perfectly. Bloody great!
