Mary Oliver

Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese,
harsh and exciting —
over and over announcing your place in the family of things.

potential vs. function

wings that never fly
still unsettle predators,
clouds float in the sky.

I was so preoccupied
with thoughts about Mars,
all of them:
the Roman god of war
and the red planet
𝑒𝑎𝑔𝑒𝑟 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑚𝑒 𝑎 51𝑠𝑡 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑒,
that my windshield
suddenly got sprinkled
with bloody rain -

𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧,
I whipped out my wiper blades.

What Once Was Great
Czesław Miłosz

What once was great, now appeared small.
Kingdoms were fading like snow-covered bronze.

What once could smite, now smites no more.
Celestial earths roll on and shine.

Stretched on the grass by the bank of a river,
As long, long ago, I launch my boats of bark.
